Rob and Michele Reiner's children have spoken out for the first time following their parents' deaths.

Jake and Romy Reiner, two of the couple's three children, have released a statement after their brother Nick was arrested and has since been charged for murdering his parents.

The legendary director and actor and his wife Michele Singer were found dead in their California home on Sunday (14 December).

Nick is said to have struggled with mental health issues and drug addiction in the past, with the 32-year-old charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders.

Prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that they will file charges which includes the two counts and a special allegation that he used a dangerous weapon, which is reported to be a knife.

While it could result in the death penalty, it could also result in a life prison sentence without parole.

Speaking in a statement shared with People, Jake and Romy Reiner spoke about how it has been in the days following the tragedy.

"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," they began.

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

They went on: "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,

"We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."

If Nick is found guilty, district attorney Nathan Hochman said that a death sentence could be on the cards.

He said: "Rob Reiner was a brilliant actor and director, an iconic force in our entertainment industry for decades. His wife, Michel Singer Reine, was an equally iconic photographer and producer.

"Their loss is beyond tragic. We will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice."

Reports have suggested that the 32-year-old cut the throats of his parents in bed, with sources suggesting he argued with his dad at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party the night before.

Rob Reiner, who is known for directing hit films such as When Harry Met Sally and Stand By Me, had a strained relationship with Nick, though they made a film together about the latter's struggles with drug use.
