Ryan Reynolds reflected on what being mowed down by a car was like - and, spoiler alert, it was quite the ordeal.

Although you might think he is indestructible after watching Deadpool, the actor said he was left a 'rickety, broken mess' after the incident that took place in his hometown.

He ended up spending a month in hospital after he was allegedly run over by a drunk driver while he was crossing the road in Vancouver, Canada.

Reynolds, 49, shared the shocking story in a recent interview with GQ alongside his Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney.

Ryan Reynolds' car accident

While attempting and failing to erect a shelf, Reynolds shared an anecdote about how he was struck by a vehicle after leaving a bar when he was 18 years old.

The Green Lantern actor, who shares four children with his wife of more than a decade Blake Lively, explained he'd 'had a beer' so decided to leave his car behind.

"I walked back and I looked at my car for a second and I thought, 'You know what, I'm not going to drive anywhere - even if it's four blocks home, absolutely not'," he told McElhenney.

"So instead, I turn around and start to cross the street... and I got run over by a drunk driver."

Reynolds, who has a reported net worth of $350 million, then joked as he struggled with a screw: "That was the last time I 'why Godded' as much as this!"

'Broke every bone in my left side'

The news came as a surprise to McElhenney, who said it was 'the first time' he had heard this story from his pal.

Offering some further details, Reynolds said: "I got run over by a drunk driver after making a firmly positive and wise decision for a young, 18-year-old male.

"Spent four weeks in the hospital. Broke every bone in my left side. He hit me so hard, his car was not operational.

"I'd like to thank Dr Meek at the General Hospital for putting me back together so kindly. Socialised medicine, he couldn't say no."

Although McElhenney had never heard this dramatic tale before, Reynolds has previously spoken about it publicly in the past.

He discussed how he was hit by the intoxicated motorist while chatting to CTV News back in 2011, according to the Huff Post.

The Golden Globe-nominated actor said he was left unconscious after the incident and eventually 'woke up three days later' in hospital.

"I remember my dad sitting there [with] a vomit tray," Reynolds said. "I guess I had been heaving in my unconscious.

"And nothing says love like painting someone with three-day-old Gin Rummies. Just soaked the man head to toe in my vomit."

Breaking a number of bones did take a lasting toll on him though, as he added: "Since then, I’ve been a rickety, broken mess."
