Chris Brown appears to congratulate ex Rihanna after Super Bowl halftime pregnancy announcement

Chris Brown has seemingly congratulated ex Rihanna following her Super Bowl halftime show, in which she revealed that she is pregnant.

Rihanna took to the field at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, for her first performance in seven years, and what better stage to announce that she's expecting a second child?

The 34-year-old kicked off the performance suspended high above the stadium dressed in all red, and with a knowing look to the camera, she opened her jacket and stroked her pronounced stomach, with fans quickly speculating that this was a pregnancy announcement.

Sure enough, the news was later confirmed by her representative, and social media was awash with praise for the singer.

And Brown was among those who seemed to praise the star.

In an Instagram story, the 33-year-old simply wrote 'Go girl' with a red heart and prayer emoji.

The pair began dating in 2007, but her performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards was cancelled amid rumours that Brown had assaulted her.

A now-infamous picture was leaked to the US showbiz website TMZ, showing Rihanna with a visibly bruised and swollen face – and Brown was later convicted of the assault, receiving five years' probation and a community service order.

Rihanna is now in a relationship with rapper ASAP Rocky, and the couple welcomed their first child, a boy, last May.

Ahead of her Super Bowl performance, Rihanna hinted that the performance would be a family affair, saying that it was 'important' for her son to watch it.

In a separate interview with Total Access NFL, she said she was 'thinking about bringing someone'.

Fans were treated to a selection of hits from her catalogue, including 'B**ch Better Have My Money', 'We Found Love' and 'Umbrella', as well as two tracks she recorded with controversial rapper Kanye West – played back to back.

West - who has recently come under fire over a series of antisemitic remarks - featured on 'Run This Town', which was written by her former mentor Jay-Z.

Rihanna also sang on his track 'All of The Lights', which is included on his 2011 album My Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Throughout the performance, the singer commanded the stage, strolling up and down amid an army of dancers dressed in white hoodies and sweat pants – at one point stopping to touch up her make-up.

Strobe lights and fireworks punctuated the show, and the singer donned a long red coat to finish with hits 'Umbrella' and 'Diamonds'.

Famous faces spotted among the crowd in the 63,000-seat stadium included Jay-Z, Floyd Mayweather, Adele, and Sir Paul McCartney – who headlined the Super Bowl halftime show himself in 2005.
