Toy Story fans are about to get a whole new insight into Buzz Lightyear before he joined Woody's gang as Pixar has just released a new trailer for the origin story Lightyear. Check it out below:

Starring Captain America star Chris Evans, the film is set to arrive on June 17 and is described as a 'sci-fi action-adventure' which is set to present 'the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy'.

The trailer sees Buzz blasting off on a new adventure and, together with his colleague, uttering the now-iconic phrase "To infinity and beyond".

All doesn't quite go to plan, though, as the next time Buzz goes to greet his colleague he finds out he's been gone for more than 60 years. 62 years, seven months and five days, to be precise.

Dropped into the future, Buzz is now tasked with taking on robots and, of course, his infamous archenemy Emperor Zurg.

Buzz was voiced by Tim Allen in the original Toy Story film more almost three decades ago, and though he did return the role for the three sequels, the character of Buzz has now been handed over to Evans.

The actor expressed his excitement for the project, Disney reports, saying: "The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life.

"Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else.

"Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

After news of Evans' involvement was announced, the actor took to Instagram to assure 'no one could ever touch' Allen's performance as the character.

He commented: "My team could barely contain their excitement when they told me that Pixar had a pitch for me. All they said was ‘Buzz Lightyear’. I didn’t know what that meant, since Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear, and no one could ever touch his performance.

"I needed to know how this character was different and why this story was worth telling. I can say 2 things with absolute confidence: 1.. I didn’t stop smiling through the ENTIRE pitch. Ear to ear. 2. Everyone can rest easy. And get very excited."

Evans added that the film is going to be 'special', saying: "I can’t even put my excitement into words. I smile every time I think about it."

Lightyear is directed by 'veteran Pixar animator' Angus MacLane, who brought us the 2016 film Finding Dory.
