A sequel to one of the biggest science fiction films from last year is in the works.
Dune had huge success at the box office, raking in $41 million on opening weekend in the US and Canada alone, with a grand total of over USD$400 million (£329 million).
The sci-fi hit was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and took home six trophies, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects.
So fair to say, this up-coming sequel has some big expectations to fill.
When is Dune Part 2 coming out?
With production and filming set to begin in the second half of this year, we’ve got a bit of waiting to do before we can see the sequel in all its glory on the big screen.
The current release date is set for 17 November 2023, with Warner Bros. confirming a slight delay in the film's release from the previous prediction of October 2023.
With approximately 12,000 hours till its release, this gives you time to watch the first Dune movie 4,832 times on repeat.
Director Denis Villeneuve has also hinted at the potential for a third movie as well, so keep your fingers crossed.
Who is in the cast of Dune Part 2?
With a mix of returning and new faces, the confirmed cast for the sequel so far is huge.
Reprising their roles from Part One will be:
- Zendaya as Chani
- Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
- Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck
- Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides
- Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladmir Harkonnen
In addition, the cast of Part Two will also feature:
- Florence Pugh
- Austin Butler
- Christopher Walken
- Léa Seydoux
For music and soundtrack nerds, the legend himself, Hans Zimmer, will also be returning to score the sequel.
What is the plot of Dune Part 2?
Both Dune (2021) and Dune (1984) are adaptations of Frank Herbet’s 1965 novel of the same name.
The 2021 film only covered events from the first half of the book, so the upcoming sequel will depict what happens later in the epic novel.
While there may be some slight changes from the original, the film will likely follow Paul’s continual rise to power as he tries to bring about peace to Arrakis.Featured Image Credit: Warner Bros.
