Eva Mendes explains why she won't join husband Ryan Gosling on Barbie red carpet

The couple are notoriously private

Eva Mendes has revealed why you won't see her beside Ryan Gosling on the red carpet for the highly anticipated Barbie movie this summer, no matter how much fans want it.

For Barbie fans, the only thing as exciting as the upcoming Greta Gerwig film finally arriving to cinemas is seeing the impressive A-list cast rock up to the red carpet.

And, while you're likely to see Margot Robbie, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey and Will Ferrell appear alongside Ryan Gosling at the premiere - and any future awards ceremonies it might land - you're probably not going to spot Gosling's partner Eva Mendes.

Mendes, who has been linked to Gosling since 2011 but only revealed last year that the pair had tied the knot, warned eager fans that the notoriously private couple would be keeping things low-key once the movie dropped.

The Hitch star took to Instagram to share a video of herself and Gosling on the set of their 2012 film A Place Beyond The Pines, giving fans a rare glimpse into their relationship.

"Magic is Real," she wrote.

"We did not meet on set.

"The magic started way before but here’s a little magic captured on camera. Gracias to the increíble director Derek Cianfrance."

Commenting on the post, a fan admitted that they were holding out hope for a Mendes-Gosling appearance on the red carpet soon.

"I really hope Barbie will get through the awards season just to see you with Ryan," they wrote. "I know I’m selfish and probably a dreamer but I will never stop [dreaming] about it."

But Mendes was quick to let the fan know that their dream wasn't likely to come true.

"You’re the best! What a cool comment, thank you," the actor wrote.

"But we don’t do those things together.

"Like these photos I’ve been posting, I'm only comfortable posting because it’s already out there."

Mendes later clarified that they did, in fact, do *one* red carpet together - but that was just because they had starred in the same film.

"Oh wait - for those who may catch me in a ‘lie’ - we only were on the red carpet together once when promoting this film," she posted.

When another fan politely asked Mendes why she and Gosling don't feel 'comfortable' attending events together, she explained her thought process.

Ryan Gosling will star in the Barbie movie as Ken.

"May I ask why you don’t feel comfortable doing those things together? You guys are such a beautiful couple," read the comment, to which Mendes replied: "By ‘not comfortable’, I mean exposing our very private life that we value.

"I’m still dying to do another movie with him though..."

So, if you're as desperate to see this Hollywood couple on the red carpet together as everyone else, you'd better hope someone casts them in the same movie soon.
