Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes make their first official public appearance together in over ten years

Married couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes enjoyed a rare public appearance together last night on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

Despite being husband and wife for some times, having met back in 2011 while filming The Place Beyond The Pines, the celebrity couple certainly shy away from the spotlight when it comes to their personal life.

Mendes has previously opened up about the reason why their kids don't have phones, as she wishes to protect them from society, and it seems as if her and Ryan follow the same stance.

Although Gosling doesn't have a history of playing superheroes in Marvel or DC films, he and his wife do seem to have developed a superpower when it involves avoiding the paparazzi, and you'll struggle to find too many pictures of them together online.

So, it was certainly a surprise when Gosling suggested that the audience sing Happy Birthday to his wife, who turned 52 yesterday, and an even bigger surprise when she emerged from backstage to join the festivities.

Although she appeared delighted with the birthday wishes in front of the camera, as a marching band played Happy Birthday in the background, she even joked with Fallon about cutting the footage, perhaps so that only those in the audience would be able to see them together.

Mendes has also previously revealed exactly why the two no longer appear on the red carpet together, speaking when Gosling's fame reached new heights with his frankly iconic performance as Ken in Barbie.

She said: "We don't do those things together.

"Like these photos I've been posting, I'm only comfortable posting because it's already out there."

In fact, the only time they've been on the red carpet together is for their 2012 film, which is a refreshing change from the amount of celebrity couples we're all forced to know about when their relationships are plastered in front of the cameras.

Mendes, who is best known for her roles in films such as Hitch and The Other Guys, has also taken a step back from the world of Hollywood to instead focus on being a mother, as she hasn't appeared in a film since 2014.

She explained: "Unfortunately - or fortunately - there is only one Ryan. So I pretty much stopped acting after that [having children].

"It was a no-brainer. I'm so lucky and I was like, if I can have this time with my children...

"And I still worked! I just didn't act, because acting takes you on locations, it takes you away.

"It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, 'Okay. He [Gosling] is going to work, and I'm going to work - I'm just going to work here."
