Fans of Lord Of The Rings were given a special previous of the highly-anticipated series, and it's safe to say they were excited.

The upcoming Amazon prime series is set to be a prequel, of sorts, to the iconic film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson and based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The official synopsis for the series stating that The Rings of Power will 'take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness'.

"Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

"From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

If that and the trailer weren't enough to excite you about the series, this next part might be, because fans seem to have loved what they've seen so far.

One fan said: "Amazon invited me to meet the team behind @LOTRonPrime. I fell in love with their vision – I now need to see that on screen. Check out my thoughts on the @TolkienSociety website. #LOTRROP #RingsOfPower."

Another wrote: "Last week, I was invited by the @LOTRonPrime folks, along with a bunch of other internet Tolkien folks, to attend an advanced screening of some footage from the #RingsofPower show and to meet the showrunners. I must say: after meeting them, I feel the show is in VERY good hands."

A third added: "Last week I was invited to watch Lord of the Rings by my brother. I also was privileged to listen to Pete Jacksons commentary and I feel like he really gets Tolkien. I can safely say after attending the marathon that LOTR is still the greatest trilogy of all time #RingsOfPower."

While fans have go us pretty excited to see the series, there's a bit of a wait.

As Rings of Power is set to drop on Amazon on 2 September.
