Rami Malek and Black Panther have led the way in this year's Oscars nominations, ahead of the awards ceremony on Sunday 24 February.

Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born Vice and have all been shortlisted for the coveted Best Picture gong.

Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Rami Malek and Viggo Mortenson are all up for Leading Actor Oscars, and Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Olivia Coleman, Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy are nomianted for Leading Actress Oscars.

Marvel also has some nods this year - Avengers: Infinity War has been nominated for Best Visual Effects, while Black Panther is up for seven in total: Best Picture, Production Design, Sound Mixing, Costume Design, Sound Editing and Best Original Score and Original Song. Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse is also up for best animated film.

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was the big winner at the 76th Golden Globe Awards earlier this month. Rami Malek, who plays frontman Freddie Mercury, scooped the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, while the film itself took the prize for Best Motion Picture - Drama.

"I am beyond moved," Malek said when he accepted the award, also thanking Freddie Mercury, adding: "This is for and because of you, gorgeous."

Queen guitarist, Brian May, has also heavily praised the film, and said Malek deserved to be nominated for an Oscar for his 'remarkable' performance.

Speaking to the Press Association, he said: "He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.

"He's incredible... without doubt he'll be on the nominations list for an Oscar - and well deserved as well.

"We've lived with this project for nine years and it's incredible to see it doing so well. It came out to shitty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently.

"Everybody gave 200 percent, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and make-up, everyone. You don't get any lukewarm responses. The guy who plays me should be getting awards all over."
