Barbie has just officially become Margot Robbie's most successful film.

The Greta Gerwig-directed film has already grossed over $774 million worldwide, which has surpassed 2016's Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad made $746.8 million worldwide at the box office, against a production budget of $175 million.

The film all about the Mattel doll, which has continually broken box office records since it premiered a week and a half ago, was produced by Robbie's production company, Lucky Chap.

Robbie runs the production company with her husband Tom Ackerley, their former housemate Josey McNamara, and Robbie’s childhood friend Sophia Kerr.

The Aussie actor first met Ackerley and McNamara on the set of Suite Francaise in mid-2013. The men were assistant directors on the World War II romantic drama and Robbie had a supporting role.

According to Variety, the three got drunk together at the London premiere of Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and decided to move into a share house in Clapham.

They came up with the idea for the production company and brought Kerr on as their fourth.

“We never started a company to be a starring vehicle for me or to be a platform for me to chase my dreams,” Robbie told The Hollywood Reporter in 2020.

“It was really that we wanted to expand what female stories and female storytellers could do in this industry, and I don’t need to be onscreen for that to happen.”

Warner Bros.

Robbie said the goal with Barbie was to subvert expectations.

“We like the things that feel a little left of centre,” Robbie said.

“Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted’.

“Can we truly honour the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”

Greta Gerwig also made history when Barbie grossed US$356m in the opening weekend around the world, making it the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.
