It’s almost Christmas which means you’ve probably watched Home Alone for the hundredth time already.
The 1990 classic family film follows eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), who is accidentally left behind when his huge (and seemingly very rich) family rushes off for a holiday in Paris.
Chaos soon unfolds when Kevin has to ward off two bumbling burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), who plan to rob the house on Christmas Eve.
The mischievous Kevin uses his ingenuity to defend his home by rigging the property with elaborate booby traps to stop the thieves.

For decades, fans have understandably assumed that the scenes were filmed inside a house, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Before we go any further, consider this a small but devastating warning: the next few paragraphs may crack the glossy, tinsel-wrapped illusion you’ve been living under since 1990… and possibly ruin your childhood just a little.

Fans are just discovering that the exterior shots showing the massive McCallister residence were taken of a home located in Winnetka, Illinois.
However, the indoor scenes are part of an elaborate recreation of the home. This isn’t unusual in Hollywood, however, the place where the interior shots were built is rather surprising.
The indoor scenes were actually recreated in a school gymnasium. Yes, really.
The gym in New Trier Township High School is where the interior of Kevin McCallister’s home was built, as the actual house was apparently too small for filming.
The Home Alone revelation was reported in the Netflix series The Movies That Made Us, and for many viewers, it was new information.
One X user wrote: "Was anyone else kind of heartbroken when they found out Home Alone's scenes inside the house were actually filmed in a gym?"

A second added: "You know I spent my whole life believing that they filmed it in that house. I know that isn't normal but someone told me that when I was younger until I watched 'The Movies That Made Us' haha."
While a third commented: "I was TODAY years old when I learned that the scenes filmed inside the home for Home Alone were actually filmed inside a high school gym."
A number of X users recently slammed a post claiming to show the 35-year difference between the McCallister house in 1990 and 2025 with a new modernised interior.

One said: "The Home Alone house was a set made in a gymnasium and decorated only for the movie like that."
Someone else penned: "Another yearly reminder that all the interior scenes of Home Alone were all constructed inside of a high school gym."
Indeed, the upgraded interior is from the real house in Illinois.
Project manager Scott Price recently told NBC News: "Our vision is to bring back the warmth and just the love from the movie.

"There was so many great colours and it just made you feel like family and like home and we want to bring that magic back."
Price did not reveal a timeline for these changes, but added: "We love this movie; it was a really important movie in our childhood and that’s true for the family that owns the house too."
