John Cena has spoken out on the major effect the film he starred in alongside Amy Schumer had on his career.

The WWE wrestler has managed to break out of just being the ‘you can’t see me’ meme and is now one of the world’s most recognisable actors.

Starring in films like the brand-new Prime Video movie Heads of State, along with blockbusters like The Suicide Squad and Fast and Furious 9, he is now undeniably an action star.

At one time, though, his acting experience went as far back as films like The Marine and playing the dad in Fred: The Movie, which averaged a score of two out of 10 on IMDb.

One of the major roles that changed this for him, however, was in Trainwreck.

The film stars Schumer as Amy, a young woman who believes that relationships and love are a fools game. This all changes when she meets Aaron, a lovely surgeon played by Bill Hader.

In the film, however, is Cena as Steven, a gym obsessed ‘bro’ who is dating Amy prior to her meeting Aaron.

Cena and Schumer share a sex scene in the film, with Schumer having spoken since about how he was ‘inside her’. Though this was mostly a joke about the close proximity and her jokes that he had a ‘prosthetic wooden penis’.

Cena himself stated that he had worn a ‘spandex sock’ in the film and called filming the sex scene ‘real embarrassing’.

He did, however, praise Schumer for the welcoming environment with it being his first sex scene.

Cena said: “Amy is an angel, she made the environment so comfortable, and then when I got the part, eventually they were like: ‘Yeah, it's a sex scene. We want you to do elaborate and crazy stunt sex, and all those lines you had?

“We're probably not going to use them, we're just going to do this stunt sex scene.'"

The WWE wrestler spoke about the film recently as part of the press tour for Heads of State and the movie’s ten-year anniversary this year.

He said in an interview with Swooon that it was a ‘great movie’ before adding: “It really did wonders for me.

“There’s always a special place for Amy and Judd [Apatow, the film’s director] in my heart, but I think watching it back as a fan, it’s a fun movie to watch.”

Others have concurred with Cena that his role in Trainwreck helped pave his path into working in comedy, leading to roles in films such as Blockers and Vacation Friends.

This paved the way for his life as an action star and DC superhero, returning from James Gunn’s Suicide Squad to lead his own spin-off show Peacemaker.

Trainwreck is available to watch on Netflix now and Heads of State is out now globally on Prime Video.
