The Batman II has been a long wait, with the Robert Pattinson-led DC sequel set to come out six years after the original, but Matt Reeves will not be the director to finish up filming on the sequel.
Reeves was widely praised for his first Batman film, following on from his hugely successful Planet of the Apes trilogy, however he has had to step back from filming of the sequel for family reasons.
With Robert Pattinson’s busy schedule of appearing in seemingly every blockbuster around however it seems they want to finish off filming now whilst they have all the actors and sets secured and so Reeves has brought in a replacement to finish up filming.
Rather than go with a lesser-known name however Reeves has managed to bring in a beloved replacement in Stephen Soderbergh, the Oscar winning director behind Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and Oceans Eleven.

This led to concerns that Matt Reeves was stepping away from the project entirely, however he has come out to deny that this is the plan.
He explained in a post on X: “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”
Deadline have reported that Reeves and Soderbergh will communicate throughout filming, stating that the original director will be taking over post-production when he is ready to return.

DC released a statement saying: “As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2.
“Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfil Matt’s vision of the film.”
Soderbergh’s statement said that he thought ‘Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning’, adding: “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

James Gunn, who is now the co-CEO of DC Studios as well as directing Superman, said on X: “Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be. I can’t express how profoundly grateful and moved we are by Steven’s offer to help him complete his vision.”
The movie is arguably the most highly anticipated from DC right now, with Robert Pattinson returning alongside Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell.
The sequel has drawn a huge amount of interest however due to its new additions, with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Jayme Lawson joining the cast.
The Batman: Part II will release in cinemas 18 February, 2028.
