Robert Pattinson explains why it would ‘be tough’ for his Batman to appear in other DC films

Between Robert Pattinson’s incredible outing as Batman and David Corenswet’s successful first film as Superman last year, fans of DC everywhere have been clamouring for the two to cross over in James Gunn’s DCU. If you were one of those fans though, Robert Pattinson has bad news for you.

Pattinson’s appearance in Matt Reeves' The Batman predate the brand new DCU set up by Gunn, and the actor doesn’t seem convinced this is likely to change anytime soon.

Rumours have persisted that this could be in the works despite Gunn himself coming out and pouring cold water on the idea of him playing their Batman, but with comic book movies it is always possible that creatives are just trying to avoid spoiling future twists.

Speaking to ET in the past Gunn shut down the idea but didn’t close the door, saying that ‘isn’t what’s happening right now’, but speaking exclusively to LADbible in a new interview Pattinson explained why he thinks it simply wouldn’t work.

Pattinson spoke to LADbible ahead of the release of the Chris Hansen movie Primetime alongside his co-star Skyler Gisondo. Gisondo himself stars as Jimmy Olsen in Superman and is set to appear in his own DC TV show The People vs Gorilla Grodd.

When asked how Pattinson’s Batman would fare around slightly less dark characters such as Gisondo’s Olsen, the actor joked that he would simply ‘make the other characters more serious’.

He continued by saying it was ‘funny’ because Skyler and Superman filmed in Atlanta, saying: “It’s so funny, because Gotham is Watford. It’s a shed in Watford. There’s something so destabilising about when you're just, you're in the dark the whole time.

“I mean just for eight months in the dark and you literally have no conception of being connected to anything in the world.” He added that it was ‘difficult to even maintain your sanity’.

Ultimately though, whilst he didn’t deny outright that a crossover of some kind was possible, Pattinson was unconvinced by the idea of Reeve’s version of Bruce Wayne interacting with the wider DCU.

The actor said it was ‘interesting’ to think about, explaining: “I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world. It's one of the only characters I guess because of the length of the shoots but also it's such a specific kind of [style], the tone of it gets inside you.

“I remember that happened to me the last time I did it, it took a while. You’re just in the dark, the whole time. Both mood-wise and light-wise, I can't see anything for like months.

“It does affect you like you feel strange afterwards.” He joked that if Bruce got brought into another DC film he’d be hiding behind his hands going ‘I can’t see’.

Gisondo meanwhile joked that he realised when auditioning for Primetime that this would mean ‘Batman and Jimmy Olsen going after paedophiles’, calling it a ‘pretty cool idea’.

The pair co-star in Primetime as Chris Hansen and ‘Dan Plum’, a fictional composite of the decoys who would pretend to be children on To Catch a Predator, with Merritt Weaver playing Andie Bender, a fictional composite of producers on the show.

Primetime releases 25 September in the US and 31 October in the UK.
