The first trailer has dropped for the newest film from Parasite director Bong Joon-Ho, and fans are shocked by the concept.

The film, called Mickey 17, has had a troubled release, with Joon-Ho reported to have had to fight Warner Brothers over the cut.

Though the Oscar-winning director has rebuffed these claims, stating that having the final cut was part of his contract, it has meant fans have been waiting a long time for the release of the Robert Pattinson led film announced in 2022.

Mickey 17 is based on the book Mickey 7, with Warner Brothers optioning the film before the book was even released on concept alone.

The film has a massive budget of $150 million, meaning it will be one of the biggest movies of the start of 2025 with its release date of January 31.

Joining Robert Pattinson is a stacked cast of some of the best actors working, with Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and This is England star Thomas Turgoose.

Check out the trailer here:

The concept is bonkers, with Pattison’s Mickey being a ‘disposable’.

This sees him sent to dangerous planets and dying over and over again, with an organisation harvesting his deaths for knowledge and data.

Each time, he is cloned and brought back, and each time he dies.

Mickey 17, however, breaks the cycle and does not die, and meets Mickey 18, kicking off the plot of the movie.

Some fans were shocked by both the mind-bending plot of the film, and the tone.

One comment on the subreddit r/movies said: “Not what I expected, but I’m for it.”

Another fan tweeted about the film saying: “Damn. Love that synopsis”.

A third simply said: “Interesting concept.”

Others were simply ecstatic at how great the trailer looks.

One comment on reddit focused on Pattinson’s accent: “Man, Pattinson’s talent for accents is really unmatched. Only other actor I’ve seen cover as many dialects so effortlessly is Gary Oldman. Pattinson never has the same American accent. It’s weird”.

Another focused on a specific change from the book, focusing on a hilarious detail Bong Joon-Ho revealed in interviews. They said: “The book is awesome. Looking forward to seeing a crazier version.

"The book is titled Mickey 7, and Bong changed the title because he said he wanted to kill him 10 more times."

Finally, a third simply commented: “Wasn't expecting that kind of tone, but hey, I'm glad someone decided to give Bong Joon-ho $150 million just to make this. At worst, it will be very interesting.”
