Miles Teller, the star of Whiplash, Top Gun: Maverick, and War Dogs, has opened up about whether he’d get back in the cockpit for another go alongside Tom Cruise.

The actor spoke out about the possibility whilst promoting his newest movie The Gorge, which he stars in alongside Anya Taylor-Joy.

The film sees the pair star as snipers, tasked with manning positions above a terrifying chasm.

While Teller is perhaps best known for Whiplash, one of the first films of his career, inarguably his most successful movie is 2022’s sequel to Top Gun.

The movie was a serious gamble, a follow up to a 36-year-old film with ten times the budget.

It made almost $1.5 billion worldwide, and talks of a sequel have already been confirmed.

When discussing The Gorge alongside his co-star Anya Taylor-Joy, we spoke to Teller about what it was like for films like Top Gun: Maverick to be so well received, and whether he would consider coming back for a potential third outing.

Teller responded: “I mean, I think it's a wonderful feeling when you make something that connects with an audience on any scale, but especially when you're making a movie that really is seen and beloved on the on a global stage.

“To me that's really what the success means. I go, ‘Oh, man, look at, look at the size of this audience that we were able to reach with this movie.’

“And you know, we have sequelitis and things like that. But it took 30, you know, something years for them to make sequel to Top Gun because Tom wanted to make sure it was right, and now the bar is here.

“If we can match that, I would love to be a part of it, but we make this art to have an audience.

“It doesn't exist in a vacuum. So yeah, that was a really, really incredible feeling to have.”

The question, asked to Teller in reference to Top Gun and Taylor-Joy in reference to Peaky Blinders elicited a perhaps more coy answer from his female co-star about possible future involvement, with her adding: “What he said, absolutely, literally what he said.”

Taylor-Joy may have been coy about future projects, however she was full of praise for her time filming The Gorge.

When asked about the experience of training for the role and filming the action scenes, Taylor-Joy said: "I got lucky. I had rolled off of Furiosa into this, and so by the time they handed me my gun, I was like, 'Ah, I've been doing this for six months.'

"My arm muscles were present. But yeah, it's a really beautiful part of the job to get these different skills, especially because I, Anya, have no experience with any of this.

"If it's such an important part of my character's life, it feels weird if you weren't able to do all of the things, or if you didn't have the same mentality, and then, because we got to do so many cool set pieces, that was really fun to rehearse.

"Most of this movie is practical, like there's very little CGI, actually."

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor Joy'sThe Gorge has been well received, with a fresh 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and a fan score of 76%.

Glenn Kenny of The New York Times was full of praise for Teller’s performance as well as Taylor-Joy’s, saying: “For all the elaborate weaponry, production design and frantic action offered here, this movie crackles most as a lively pas de deux between Taylor-Joy and Teller, who commendably take their material seriously no matter how seriously ridiculous it gets.”

The Gorge is available to stream on Apple TV+ now.
