Millions of people just illegally got to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day for free

Tom Holland has been a busy man who has been appearing in major works this year that have recently been released in theatres – but apparently, social media has had a hand in illegally leaking them.

You might be aware that the next instalment of the spider Marvel Universe series in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which officially released in cinemas just yesterday (31 July).

But you didn't actually have to go to see it the traditional way if you were online at the time, because the flick was allegedly leaked Friday morning on X.

According to Deadline, millions of accounts accessed it before it was taken down later that same day. If you think about it, that's taking millions of ticket sales away from Sony and Marvel, who own the franchise.

Having just checked X right now, there are more that have been uploaded, showing 2.16 hours of the flick, which is 10 minutes less than the full movie's run time.

Underneath one post with the movie attached, a commenter wrote: "Your account getting banned in 24 hours dawg lol."

A second said something similar, writing: "you might have to say goodbye to your account soon enough."

Another said: " At this point, that's not a video anymore, it's a cinema release."

Someone else wrote: "Don’t let them keep taking it down keep posting."

This comes right off the back of another leak which allowed viewers to see yet another Holland flick: The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan’s epic has been in the news for a number of reasons in the run up to its release, one of which is because it was the first flick to be shot entirely on IMAX film.

However, this only increased its demand and soon, people began ordering tickets like crazy so they could watch it in its 'true form' in one of only three cinemas in the UK able to screen 70mm IMAX.

With tickets sold out for miles, apparently, millions ended up watching it illegally after a post went viral on X 25 July, claiming: “Someone uploaded The Odyssey full movie on X. Can you believe it?”

Variety reported a ‘high-quality version of the film’ was shared on the post, and reached over 2.1 million views within two and a half hours.

That means fans were able to watch almost the full movie, with around 22 minutes to spare before it was taken down.

Universal Pictures gave a statement to Variety about the leak, where it said: “We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
