Spider-Man: Brand New Day post credits scene explained ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day is almost upon us.

Set for a wide theatrical release tomorrow (July 31), this fourth solo outing for Tom Holland's web-slinger has already been screened for the critics, meaning we now know how the film ends.

Despite Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and even Michael Mando returning as their respective MCU characters across the primary bulk of the action, it's Brand New Day's post-credits sequence that arguably steals their thunder.

As for how it trickles into this December's spectacular showdown Avengers: Doomsday - starring Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man - that's anyone's guess right now, but what we can tell you is that Peter Parker finds himself off-world after the events of Brand New Day.

The brief scene in question is totally actor-less, featuring nothing but a computer-generated depiction of Spider-Man's tracker.

Beginning in New York City, the locater cannot track its subject down, forcing it to pull further and further out until the monitor takes us off terra firma altogether.

Now scanning the black expanse of space, it finally nails down Spidey, seemingly out in some sort of alien limbo.

A title card then announces: 'Spider-Man Will Return'.

Fascinatingly, Holland isn't listed in the ensemble cast of Doomsday or its follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars, so if we're to welcome him back to the fray in either of those films, it'll likely be in a surprise cameo capacity.

Should the high-schooling superhero miss out on a Doomsday appearance, there's a possibility that the aforementioned post-credits scene is in fact setting up a Battleworld situation for Secret Wars.

In the original Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom mashes together pieces of destroyed planets to create Battleworld, where captured super-powered beings are forced to knock shades out of each other for his entertainment.

Alternatively, Holland's Spidey will skip both upcoming Avengers flicks and instead simply come back for a fifth solo film at some unspecified date.

In other news, Holland himself has told Happy Sad Confused podcaster Josh Horowitz that a succession plan has already been formed for his character.

"I have a really clear vision for the passing on of the baton," he teased, "I think it's really exciting."

Previous to his involvement with the Marvel franchise, Spidey was portrayed to varying levels of popularity by Tobey Maguire (amassing four films, including the multiverse epic Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Andrew Garfield (three films).
