Cinemagoers devastated as Oppenheimer screening ‘shuts off’ with 40 minutes left

Oppenheimer is out today, but at one IMAX cinema it seems as if they never saw the end of the film

Cinemagoers were left disappointed after their showing of Oppenheimer cut out with just 40 minutes of the movie remaining.

Oppenheimer opened in cinemas around the world today, sharing this first release weekend with another film, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and fans have been rushing off to see both.

Obviously, they’ve got a completely different vibe, but both have their merits.

At the cinema screen we’re going to be talking about, people had come to see Cillian Murphy as physicist and father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer, starring alongside Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr. and many more.

However, around 40 minutes from the end of Christopher Nolan’s three-hour masterpiece, the whole IMAX cinema shut down, meaning that the viewers were left in suspense.

The screening just stopped mid-way through.

One person saw the funny side and took out their camera to start filming the reaction.

They captioned the video: “Cineplex Vaughn [sic] is struggling.”

In the video, accompanied by a crying face emoji, they wrote: “Our 70mm IMAX showing of Oppenheimer shut off with 40 min left.”

Through some (seriously basic) detective work, we can see that this seems to have taken place in the Cineplex theatre at the RioCan Colossus Centre of Woodbridge, in Vaughan, near to Toronto in Ontario, Canada.

Cineplex is a Canadian company, and the video says ‘Toronto’ on it.

Told you the detective work was basic.

Anyway, in the video, a man – presumably an employee of the cinema – can be heard telling the gathered crowd that he’s going to try to get the film back on in the next five minutes, and then will come back to provide more updates as time progresses.

What else can you do?

One viewer suggested: "Start it from the beginning!"

Anyway, the video has been a subject of much mirth for some folks after it was posted on TikTok.

One person joked: “THE HOLLYWOOD ELITES ARE HIDING SOMETHING FROM US.”

Another said: “They don’t want you to know the truth.”

An employee did attempt to help, but it certainly disrupted the movie.

However, others have suggested – slightly more plausibly – that the problems might be to do with the fact that the film has been made and is being shown on 70mm IMAX film, which is incredibly high fidelity, but also a lot fiddlier than just showing the digital version.

One person commented: “The projector didn’t work at all at [another cinema].

“Waited for 1-1/2 hours for them to fix it, just for them to play the digital version.”

Another wrote: “So much for seeing it the proper way on 70MM, Oppenheimer out here breaking all the projectors.”

Anyway, you can now go and see Oppenheimer in cinemas around the world, and apparently it’s really good, but hopefully you’ll be able to see the final 40 minutes.

If not, just go on Wikipedia, The story is all there as well.

A spokesperson for Cineplex said: "All Oppenheimer 70mm films shown by Cineplex are facilitated by independent third party experts who are currently stationed in our theatres.

"We are currently working directly with our partners to rectify a small number of issues.

"Due to the nature of movie presentations, both digital and film, issues occur that may interrupt showings.

"Across the country, yesterday we welcomed over 195,000 guests into our theatres to enjoy a film on the big screen."
