Ryan Gosling reveals touching reason he no longer takes on 'dark roles'

The actor, 43, explained why he has stepped away from more complex, chilling characters after becoming a dad

Ryan Gosling has got women falling at his feet thanks to a string of his starring roles making him look like one of the world's most eligible bachelors.

Between The Notebook, Blue Valentine and La La Land, it would be easy to think that Hollywood has got some kind of hidden agenda where they want to make the actor everyone's dream husband.

Sadly for us lot, Hitch star Eva Mendes got there first. Gosling put a ring on it sometime after the pair got together in September 2011, but the couple only confirmed they had tied the knot in November 2022.

The pair are famously very private, with Eva saying she'll never walk the red carpet with her husband.

They share two adorable daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 8, too, who were apparently 'confused' when their dad took on the role of Ken.

But before love, marriage and a baby carriage came along, Gosling used to take on some pretty gritty roles.

He wasn't always sporting bleach blonde hair and prancing around as Ken in Barbie - in fact, the screen star has taken on some quite chilling projects in his time.

With movies like Fracture, Gangster Squad, Murder By Numbers and Only God Forgives under his belt, Gosling actually has a really good range.

But if you prefer seeing him take on these 'dark roles', it seems as though you're going to have to go back through the archives to see the 43-year-old step into more complex characters from now on.

That's because Gosling revealed he has drastically switched up his approach to new jobs, as if they don't suit his family, he doesn't want anything to do with it.

He explained that for the sake of his partner Eva and the two children they parent, he now only takes on roles which are family-friendly and don't impact his ability to be a dad.

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the Drive star said: "I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place.

"This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first."

Damn, he really is the ideal husband.

Gosling explained that shooting La La Land was the first step towards taking tamer roles without any chilling plots, as he realised 'it would be fun' for his wife and daughters too.

He said: "Even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.

"I think it’s happened when I had kids — really, you start to be way more conscious of everything you do and everything you’ve ever done and everything you will do if you get a chance to do it."

For advice on exemplary parenting or big career moves, Gosling seems like the man to talk to.
