Tom Holland's MCU future after Spider-Man: Brand New Day makes $1 billion in a week
Spider-Man: Brand New Day may seem like a no-brainer now it’s grossed over $1 billion in a week, but Tom Holland very nearly did not return to the character for the film.
Holland’s time as Spider-Man has been tumultuous, with Sony walking away from the negotiating table with Marvel in 2019 in a move that would’ve pulled the character from the MCU.
In addition to this Holland spoke publicly about how he ‘won't make another one for the sake of making another one’ and required the script and concept for a potential fourth film to be just right.
This clearly paid off, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day has had the second biggest opening weekend of all time, having earned almost $1.2 billion worldwide at the time of writing.

With critical acclaim, fans ecstatic to see more of the character, and a post-credits tease that suggests a major role of a future Avengers film, but he is not set to appear in the next one.
Holland won’t star in Avengers: Doomsday, but is rumoured to be a big part of the upcoming sequel Secret Wars
The next Avengers film is only a short while away, with Avengers: Doomsday releasing in December of this year. The star-studded cast features the return of Robert Downey Jr, the original X-Men cast, Pedro Pascal and the Fantastic Four, and a wide range of MCU actors.
Tom Holland is not going to have any major role though, although he will likely appear in some sort of post-credits cameo to set up Secret Wars as was hinted at in the Brand New Day post-credits scene.
The Secret Wars comic lends itself to some multiversal shenanigans, surely setting up Tom Holland reuniting with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s incarnations of Peter Parker.
Holland has kept tight-lipped about the specific projects he will appear in moving forward in the MCU, but his contract and quotes from Marvel bosses give an indication of what to expect.

Appearing recently on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland spoke about how he had been working on a plan to pass the baton to another Spider-Man since finishing up on No Way Home in 2021.
He said: “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.” Holland did not specify which Spider-Man that would be, but all signs appear to be pointing to Miles Morales as he told AP he has a ‘desire to bring Miles Morales to the screen’.
Contractually Holland has another two Spider-man films, which could introduce Miles in one and then have him act as a co-lead in the next, ala the Spider-Man PS5 games, along with three other Marvel projects that he could appear in.
Amy Pascal, Chairwoman of the Motion Pictures group of Sony and senior figure in the Spider-Man production world, told Collider that she hopes Tom will be their Spider-Man ‘forever’. Kevin Feige however said that there are ‘always plans’ to make more films together but that him and Zendaya are taking much needed time to rest after their worldwide tours for Spider-Man and The Odyssey.
Whilst it’s entirely unclear what they could be, two Spider-Man films and three Marvel projects could very easily look like two Miles Morales films, two Avengers films, and Peter Parker renewing his connection with Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey to appear in 2028’s X-Men – and who would say no to that ay?
