Andrew Garfield explains why he hasn't congratulated Tom Holland on new Spider-Man film as he makes Avengers: Doomsday vow

The Uprising star Andrew Garfield has revealed why he hasn't reached out to congratulate Tom Holland on the phenomenal success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day yet.

Currently promoting his Robin Hood origin tale (or so the rumours say) directed by Paul Greengrass, Garfield is a three-time Spidey portrayer himself, having debuted as the web-shooting superhero in 2012.

He reprised Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 two years later before the comic book character was finally absorbed by the Marvel Cinematic Universe - recasting Holland in the role.

In 2021, though, Garfield, his Spider-Man predecessor Tobey Maguire, and Holland broke our brains with the multiverse-hopping No Way Home, mingling their versions of the character in order to stop a bunch of resurrected supervillains.

Brand New Day, which was released this summer and marked Holland's return to the role in a solo capacity, made $2.3 billion (£1.6 billion) at the box office to become the third highest-grossing film ever made.

So why hasn't his old pal given him a well-deserved pat on the back?

"I don't want to be disingenuous," he told Variety.

"A movie making money and people going to see it is an incredible thing, but I will reach out to him once I've seen [Brand New Day], which I'm very excited to see. And his other film, The Odyssey, I haven't managed to see either yet. I will send him a message when I see the work he has done."

In The Odyssey, which has also made over a billion pounds, Holland plays the son of Odysseus, Telemachus, who must protect his mother from would-be-suitors while his father journeys home from the Trojan War.

Elsewhere in his interview, Golden Globe Award winner Garfield was forced to address the possibility of him slinging spiderwebs for a fourth time in Avengers: Doomsday.

Given the fact he lied - it's his contractual obligation, let's not forget - about his involvement with No Way Home prior to its release, there was basically no point in asking him.

Low and behold, here's what the actor replied: "I'm not [in Doomsday]. You'll find out, I suppose, one way or another."

What with the multiverse still blown wide open within the MCU, there's definitely an opening for Garfield's iteration of Spidey, but you'd imagine that the powers-that-be would've moved on by now.

It's time for the X-Men and Fantastic Four to have their moment in the sun.
