Fans split as GTA 6 release date given update as some say ‘we’re all a little relieved’

Video game fans continue to wait for GTA 6, with it easily the most highly anticipated release of all time. When it finally drops, that is, with a major update given this week to fans.

Grand Theft Auto VI was officially confirmed just under one year ago in December 2023, with a trailer dropping on YouTube and social media much to the delight of fans who love nothing more than exploring GTA open worlds.

The trailer showed off the eccentric world of Vice City, which you could be mistaken for thinking is real life Miami given it is modelled after the Floridian city.

Little was said at the time and even less has been revealed since the trailer dropped, with almost complete radio silence for Rockstar and parent company, Take-Two.

When the trailer dropped, all it said was that GTA 6 would be released in 2025.

Well, we've finally been given an update on that this week with Take-Two confirming when we can expect the game to be released following worries in the gaming community that it could be delayed until 2026.

Speaking about GTA 6 in a financial update for the company, Take-Two also confirmed plans for two other games, Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country.

And it is good news for GTA fans, with Take-Two confirming 2025 was still on the cards.

And even more than that, the firm said it is said to in the fall, or autumn to non-American folk. GTA 5 was also released in the run up to Christmas, being released on 17 September, 2013.

"With many exciting new titles coming in fiscal 2026 - including GTA 6 in the Fall, Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country - we expect to create long-term value for our shareholders," Take-Two posted in its update.

But following the announcement, fans have been a little torn over what was said.

That's because the gaming community was gearing itself up for a second GTA 6 trailer which never arrived alongside the announcement.

I mean, sure, there's disappointment in such a moment, especially when you were expecting 90 seconds to two minutes of brand new footage from the world we're all set to invest hundreds of hours in.

But over on Reddit, the community was split.

In the GTA6 subreddit, critics of the announcement hit out at the so-called 'Rockstar moment', where the company does as it wants, not as the public expects.

But others were more than happy with there being no trailer given what else could have happened.

"Honestly, I think we are all a little relieved," one person said, hinting at Take-Two's reaffirming the release date and not announcing a delay.

Another agreed, saying: "I thought that with no trailer announcement, there was a possibility it had been delayed. But now I’m feeling more optimistic for a trailer before the end of the year."

"It's definitely better than a delay," a third posted.

But given how much this game will sell regardless of the teases we're given, other fans would not be shocked if no other trailer or announcement happened before the release. Because let's face it, we're buying it either way.

Former GTA developer Obbe Vermeij echoed this sentiment, saying that regardless of a delay or not, it will 'sell for 10-plus years and there is no competition to worry about'.
