If you’ve been waiting for your next reason to hit the virtual hardwood, NBA 2K27 is bringing plenty of new ways to play.

The latest instalment in the long-running basketball series introduces new offensive and defensive mechanics, more ways to customise your MyPLAYER, and a completely co-ed City where you can compete alongside the global NBA 2K community.

With 53 Badges, a new Synergy system, smarter AI and fresh environments across The City, there’s a lot to get familiar with before the worldwide launch on September 4.

Here’s what you need to know about the biggest gameplay updates coming to NBA 2K27.

The court is getting more strategic

The biggest changes in NBA 2K27 are happening in the moments between the highlight plays. New offensive tools give you more options when you’re trying to create space, while improvements to defence mean simply throwing your hands up and hoping for the best might not cut it anymore.

Step-Through Up-and-Unders give players another way to attack around the basket, while improved Hands-Up Shot Contests make positioning and timing more important when defending. The AI has also had a serious rethink, with smarter defensive reactions and shot contests making it harder to rely on the same moves over and over.

That means reading the court and adapting to what’s happening around you could become just as important as having the right build. The result is a game that rewards players who can switch things up when the defence starts catching on.

Building your MyPLAYER is becoming a bigger part of the game

Creating a MyPLAYER has always been about figuring out where you want your strengths to sit, but NBA 2K27 gives you more information to work with while you’re building.

The Builder now gives you immediate feedback as you adjust your player, showing how your choices affect the Badges you can access and the Badge Tokens you’ll need. With 53 Badges to work with, including 19 new additions, there’s plenty of room to experiment with what works for your style.

Want to be a defensive menace? Build around it. Prefer creating space and getting your own shot? You can lean into that too. The Builder makes it easier to see how your decisions shape the player before you commit to taking them onto the court.

Your Badges can work together

Once you’ve got your build sorted, the new Synergy system gives you another reason to think about how your Badges fit together.

Synergy lets certain Badge combinations work off each other during a game, giving you another layer to consider when putting together a build. The right combination could help you push your strengths further as you play.

That makes your Badge choices part of your wider game plan, whether you’re building around scoring, defence or another part of your game. Finding combinations that complement how you actually play could become one of the more rewarding parts of fine-tuning your MyPLAYER.

The City is getting a whole new look

The City is one of the biggest social spaces in NBA 2K, and NBA 2K27 is giving it a fresh setting to match the new gameplay.

The redesigned City has a centralised, neon-lit nighttime layout, giving the whole place a different feel when you’re moving between games. For the first time, it’s also fully co-ed, allowing female MyPLAYERs to compete alongside the wider community across The City’s game modes.

New environments are also coming to The REC, The Theater, Ante-Up and Seasonal Parks. The REC will rotate between different settings, including a high school gym, outdoor court, private gym, crowded arena and season-themed venue.

So even if you’ve spent plenty of time in The City before, there should be some new surroundings to get used to when you jump back in. Between the new layout and changing environments, there’s plenty to explore once you’re off the main court.

MyCAREER is giving you more ways to write your story

If your favourite part of NBA 2K is turning a created player into a superstar, NBA 2K27 gives you more ways to shape that journey.

MyCAREER Eras lets you take your MyPLAYER into different periods of basketball history, including the Magic vs. Bird, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron and Steph eras. It gives you the chance to experience your career against the backdrop of some of the NBA’s most iconic periods.

Then there’s co-op MyCAREER, which lets you bring a mate into the experience. Your Running Mate, Trace Miller, can be developed alongside your career, with your co-op partner taking control of him when you play together.

It adds a completely different dynamic to MyCAREER, giving you someone to build around rather than taking the journey entirely on your own. You can develop Trace as you progress, giving your duo another way to approach games together.

Your MyTEAM collection has more ways to pay off

MyTEAM is also getting changes that could make managing your collection feel more worthwhile.

The new cross-platform Auction House gives players a larger marketplace to work with, while The Exchange gives you another reason to hold onto cards you might have otherwise moved on from. Cards can now be exchanged for elite rewards, giving more of your collection a purpose.

That means building your lineup can involve more than simply chasing the next big card. Whether you’re looking to improve your squad or turn unwanted players into something useful, there are more ways to get value from the cards you collect.

You can build a basketball legacy around one player

MyNBA Legacy takes the franchise experience and puts the focus on one player’s journey.

You can choose a player from the Modern Era and develop their Attributes and Badges as they progress, giving you the chance to shape a career and create your own basketball legend.

The mode is built around a much longer-term story, so you can decide how seriously you want to take it. Whether you want to create a sprawling basketball dynasty or simply experiment with a player in a different kind of sandbox, MyNBA Legacy gives you another way to get invested in what happens on the court.

With new gameplay mechanics, deeper MyPLAYER customisation, a co-ed City and more ways to play across MyCAREER, MyTEAM and MyNBA, NBA 2K27 gives you plenty to explore when you step onto the court.

Pre-order now and you’ll be ready to jump straight into the action when NBA 2K27 launches September 4.
