HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services have announced they are merging into something that will simply be called Max, and they've officially announced that a Harry Potter reboot is on the cards.

Featuring an entirely new cast separate from the eight iconic movies, the plan is for several seasons of the TV series, with each one focusing on one of the books in JK Rowling's series.

Warner Bros. Discovery has said it expects the Harry Potter show to be a 'decade-long series', while HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys hailed the opportunity to make a show.

"We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way.

"Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World.

"In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years."

JK Rowling welcomed the chance to give Harry Potter more time on the big screen, she's attached to the project as an executive producer and said a TV show could go into the 'degree of depth and detail' needed.

"Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series," she said.

The response to a teaser sent out on HBO Max's Twitter account was pretty mixed, as there were many who thought that the Harry Potter movies were iconic enough and we didn't need to be going over old ground.

Potter fans do have some quibbles about the movie, often with the way certain characters like Ron and Ginny were portrayed or the infamous 'Dumbledore asked calmly' bit in Goblet of Fire where he yells 'DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE' and violently grabs Harry.

It's going to be strange seeing someone other than Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter.

However, plenty think they do a really good job overall and asked HBO 'please don't' make a Harry Potter TV series.

Others urged the channel to 'do something new, don't reboot', and said they 'won't be watching, films were great and the cast cannot be beaten'.

Not everyone was so down on the idea as some said they had 'MEGA HYPE' for a Harry Potter series and that they were 'SO ready' to see more of Hogwarts on their screens.

More said all they wanted was for an adaptation to 'do it justice' and wanted to see some of the bits from the books that never made it into the movies and couldn't even fit into deleted scenes.
