Only one Game of Thrones character could make an appearance in House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon takes place before Game of Thrones, but one character could feasibly feature in both

If you’ve been keeping up to date with House of the Dragon – the new hit HBO Game of Thrones spin-off – you’ll no doubt have noticed that there are a lot of similarities between the new show and the original series.

However, while there are crossovers between the two shows – the theme tune being an ideal example – there is only one character who could appear in both shows, due to the significant difference in time between the events of GoT and HotD.

While we’re not intending there to be any SPOILERS in this article, this is your obligatory SPOILER ALERT just to cover our own back.

Right - let's talk about that giant explosion in last night's episode that killed everyone, shall we?

Just kidding - but in the world of Game of Thrones lore, would you honestly be surprised?

Let’s have a look at why one Game of Thrones stalwart could make a return for this outing.

The events of House of the Dragon take place nearly 200 years before the times of Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and the rest of the gang who took on the Night King and his creepy decomposing pals.

The new show follows the formative years of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros, featuring a lot of powerful flaxen-haired characters such as King Viserys – bearing the same name as Dany’s brother of years later – the conniving Prince Daemon, and Princess Rhaenyra.

While they will all be long dead by the time Game of Thrones comes around, perhaps you might remember the time in which Lady Melisandre – or The Red Woman – took off that red necklace to reveal that she was actually super old and decrepit?

Well, according to the lore of her character, she’s actually hundreds of years old, and therefore could feasibly appear in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

This fact hasn’t passed the actor who played Melisandre, Carice van Houten.

Naturally, her career was given a massive boost in profile during HBO's original visit to Westeros, so it stands to reason that she’d want to return to the role.

On her Instagram Story, she reposted a fan’s theory about her character that read: “Just watched House of the Dragon.

“I’m just saying, Melisandre is centuries old…”

While her cryptic repost hardly guarantees her return – in fact, it’s probably quite unlikely – it doesn’t mean that she won’t appear at some point down the line.

As we’ve established, there’s a whole lot of Westerosi history to take place before there’s any crossover with the world of Game of Thrones.

Furthermore, House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a second season after only one episode, so it looks as if the popularity of the show could lead to a lengthy run.

We’ll have to wait and see how far they get.
