Jennifer Lawrence seen wearing comfortable flip flops underneath stunning red carpet gown

She broke one of the biggest unofficial rules at the Cannes Film Festival where women are supposed to wear high heels.

Flip flops are called many things: thongs, jandals, and on the odd occasion, a cardinal sin against fashion.

But there's one thing that no one can deny about flip flops.

They're a hell of a lot more comfortable than six-inch high heels.

And, when you're someone that tends to trip over like, say, Jennifer Lawrence, then the 'pro' list for wearing flip flops at a glitzy shin-dig surely starts to rise even further.

And that's precisely what she did.

Good old J-Law hit up the red carpet for the premiere of Anatomie D’une Chute (Anatomy Of A Fall) at the 76th annual Cannes International Film Festival in a stunning crimson Christian Dior couture gown.

The dress boasted a ruffled bust with corseted bustier.

She draped an elegant shawl across her arms to complete the look, and accessorised with a glittering diamond choker necklace and a wine-stained lip.

She was the picture of old Hollywood glamour from head to toe... well, almost toe.

Adorning her pieds were a pair of simple black thongs.

According to Vogue, there is a huge unwritten rule that women attending the Cannes Film Festival have to wear high heels.

Lawrence was joined by the who's who of the film industry and old industry pals, including her Bread and Roses colleague, director Sahra Mani, and American Hustle producer Justine Ciarrocchi.

Lawrence has been largely absent from the red carpet after opting for a more private life after the birth of her one-year-old son Cy, whom she shares with her husband Cooke Maroney.

Despite electing to live a more private family life after initially finding global success with the smash hit film series, The Hunger Games, she opened up to Vogue in October about her new life as a mum.

"The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over," she told the fashion magazine.

"Like, 'Now is day one of my life'. I just stared.

"I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere."

She gushed about her newfound adoration for wee infants everywhere, adding: "Newborns are just so amazing."

"They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors. Now I love all babies."

Lawrence is in Cannes to celebrate Bread and Roses, a documentary which she produced that explores the day-to-day lives of three Afghani women in the wake of the Taliban takeover of Kabul in 2021.
