John Wick director says he and Keanu Reeves are ‘done’ with the franchise

The film's director said has revealed he and star Keanu Reeves are hanging up the nunchucks.

John Wick is hanging up his weapons after the fourth film in the franchise...for now.

Stuntman turned John Wick director Chad Stahelski sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to spill the beans on all things Wick.

And, we have to say, fans might not be too thrilled about it.

"In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest," he said.

Now, before you grab your pitchforks and riot outside studio headquarters, it appears the franchise might not be completely dead.

"I’m sure the studio has a plan," Chad said.

"If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute. Wicks always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan.

"It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September.

"Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, 'What do you think?' We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins.

"If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie."

So Wick may be gone for now, but that doesn't mean he's dead in the water. Not by a long shot.

For now, fans will have to take stead in the fact that John Wick: Chapter Four is about to drop in just over one week (except in Japan, apparently) and it already has had some bloody good reviews.

The movie has just opened for critical review and has scored an impressive 89 per cent on the Tomato-metre on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Which, in the world of Rotten Tomatoes, is pretty darn good.

Courtney Howard from Fresh Fiction had nothing but praise for the franchise's upcoming fourth instalment.

"Brawny, bold and badass, this fourth film in a scorching, searing, soaring saga for the ages brilliantly balances vested stakes with an absolutely spectacular, high octane thrill ride," she wrote.

Simon Thompson from The Playlist was also clearly impressed.

He wrote: "With this wildly satisfying world tour de force, Reeves’ Wick transcends icon status delivering the perfect bone-crunching crescendo to one of the great action franchises in cinema history."

But that wasn't the end. He added: "It’s pure gold."

Jacob Hall from Slashfilm said that 'every other Hollywood action movie should be ashamed of itself' after he saw the movie.

Not bad for a movie that is taking a bit of a break, if you ask us.

So watch this space and cross your fingers for John Wick: Chapter Five.

John Wick: Chapter Four will hit cinemas on March 23.
