Kelly Clarkson Files To Legally Change Famous Last Name

Clarkson filed the documents on Monday 14 February, writing how she had a ‘desire’ to go by her first and middle names

Kelly Clarkson has filed to legally change her last name amid her divorce from Brandon Blackstock, according to court documents seen by US Weekly

The 39-year-old singer took her husband’s last name when they got married, but continued to use Clarkson professionally.

As the Metro reports, after filing for divorce in 2020, she filed to have Clarkson legally restored as her last name in August last year.

However, now she plans to ditch her surname altogether, announcing that she would prefer to go by her first and middle names – Kelly Brianne.

According to US Weekly, Clarkson filed the documents on Monday 14 February, writing how she had a ‘desire’ to go by her first and middle names.

“My new name more fully reflects who I am,” the singer explained in the documents, with a hearing set for 28 March.

In June 2020, Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.

The estranged couple got married in 2013 after two years together, and share daughter River, seven, and son Remington, five.

Speaking to the Today show’s Willie Geist in September that year, she admitted things had been ‘hard’ in her personal life.

She said: “I mean, it’s no secret. My life has been a little bit of a dumpster.

“Personally, it’s been a little hard the last couple of months. I’ve been talking to friends that have been through divorce. I don’t know how people go through that without having some kind of outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved.”

Speaking to Geist’s Today colleague Hoda Kotb that same month, Clarkson also said she was trying to ‘navigate’ her way through the high profile split.

“You can ask anyone who’s gone through a divorce, I don’t think anyone expects it,” she explained.

“You see yourself growing old with someone and then life has a different path. It’s so hard on everyone, and you know me, I’m really open. I try to be open and share … We all go through things.

"But at the same time, we have four kids total with each other. That’s a lot of hearts involved, and you just have to be really careful.

“We’re in the public eye so that’s hard too, to try and be truthful but also keep your privacy.”
