The final season of Ricky Gervais' smash-hit dark comedy After Life is touching people all around the world.

After dropping on Netflix earlier this month, many have soaked up the last few episodes with bittersweet feelings not because the show is over but because of the topic it addresses.

The show follows Tony (played by Gervais), a reporter at a free paper who is struggling to find a purpose in life after his wife died of cancer.

Across the course of the first two seasons, viewers have been moved by his battle with grief and attempts to move on from his tragic loss.

The final season has been called a real tear jerker but some fans have revealed the episodes have really helped them deal with their own personal losses.

I watched the very first episode of this the day my Nannie was diagnosed with cancer. We sadly lost her in November. After life is such a powerful but light hearted story about grief and how life ultimately goes on. It truly resonates with me and so many others. Thank you.
After Life was so unbelievably captivating. It's actually helped me cope with my cancer diagnosis a lot easier and given me a different outlook on life. Ricky Gervais did absolutely amazing with this show and it couldn't have ended any better.
Lost my wife to breast cancer in March 21. Youngest son (8) currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia. Last episode of season 3 really hit home massively.

Whether they have been diagnosed with cancer or lost someone who battled a disease, many viewers have expressed on Twitter how the show has helped them laugh during a difficult time.

One person said: "After Life is more than entertaining, it's therapeutic, it probably should be available on prescription."

Another added: "I lost my partner to cancer in 2019 so find After Life a hard watch but it feels right to watch it. You are an exceptional person and the cast are incredible. You must be so proud of what you have achieved with this show."

Writer, director and star Ricky Gervais told LADbible he wanted the ending to be 'real and satisfying, but not perfect', adding that he thought the result was 'beautiful'.

Going into the final series, Gervais admitted he toyed with numerous different endings, but is happy that the chosen conclusion is 'pretty perfect'.

He told LADbible: "There were a lot of options, and even right up to filming, there was, 'Can I do this? Is that too much?'.

"I think I went with the right ending - I'm sure I'll have to explain it on social media for the next 10 years.

"But I stand by it and I think it's pretty perfect because, with no spoilers, the theme is - life goes on. It's just that, it's just - life goes on."

After Life is now available to stream on Netflix.
