Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki has been cast to play Princess Diana in the final two seasons of The Crown.

The official social media account for the epic Netflix show made the announcement early this morning (August 17) that Debicki would take on the incredible role for seasons five and six.

Elizabeth released a statement, saying: "Princess Diana's spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one."

The Aussie actor has appeared in the likes of The Great Gatsby, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Night Manager, however this will be one hell of a character to portray.

The most recent season of The Crown fast forwarded audiences to the 1960s, where Queen Elizabeth II (played by Academy Award winner Olivia Coleman) was dealing with tragedies in Wales and her sister, Princess Margaret (played by Helena Bonham Carter).

The Queen was also observing her son, Prince Charles (played by Josh O'Connor), grow into an adult and have dalliances with Camilla Parker Bowles (played by Emerald Fennell). No doubt season four will throw us straight into the deep end with Charles and Diana's romance and subsequent wedding.

Last month, Netflix revealed it had commissioned a sixth and final season of the show.

There was only meant to be five seasons of The Crown, however the show makers explained that in order to tell the story properly, they will need one more instalment.

Creator and executive producer Peter Morgan says the additional season will allow the show to squeeze in all the happenings with the Royal family in the 1990s and early 2000s.

"Series six will not bring us any closer to present day - it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail," Morgan said.

"As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.

Netflix added: "So to summarise - we'll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton. We're just half way through! Lovely."

The sixth season could dive into the deaths of both Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother in 2002, as well as Prince Harry and William dealing with their mother's death in 1997.
