Why Michael Keaton and Courteney Cox split despite 'still loving each other'
Back in the early 1990s, Oscar-nominee Michael Keaton and Courteney Cox were a quiet power couple.
Best known for their work in Beetlejuice, Batman, Friends and Scream, the pair first grew close after Cox told a mutual friend she appreciated Keaton's performance in 1988 drama Clean and Sober.
They were subsequently set up for a date at Cox's house, in order to swerve any opportunistic paparazzi.
As Keaton turns 75 years old this weekend, we're looking back at his younger days and how this particular chapter in the actor's romantic history came to an end.

"We talked for five hours," Cox recalled of their initial encounter during an interview with PEOPLE in 1995. "We talked about our dream homes — the great ones we'd seen and the kind we'd like to build ourselves."
Their relationship, which lasted until July 1995, was a private one.
Instead of co-attending rafts of red carpet events, Keaton and Cox opted to stay at home most of the time, cooking together and falling further in love.
After they'd gone their separate ways, rumours began circulating that her ex-boyfriend was planning to go down on one knee.
"I bet that three-carat diamond is really beautiful,” Cox told The LA Times. "But I never saw it."
She also went on to label it her 'most important relationship' she'd ever experienced.
"I think he's the most wonderful person I've ever met. We still love each other."
Asked whether or not they stood a chance of reigniting their romance, the star answered: "With us, you can never tell. Nothing about our relationship was ever simple. We were sympathetic on so many levels. If something weird happened, we would turn to each other and just say, 'I know.'"
Interestingly, a different dimension on the matter was shared by Cox's late mother, Courteney Copeland.
"They were always trying to work on themselves," she once revealed to PEOPLE. "They need to forget that and accept each other the way they are — and just get married."
Judging by that insight, then, despite still very much loving one another, Keaton and Cox struggled to accept the other for who they were.
A year after they split, the Monica Geller favourite spoke to The Ladies Home Journal about what happened.
"Our lifestyles are very different," she said. "We just have different personalities. I don't want to tell too much about him because he's a very private person, and he's not quite as impulsive as I am about making decisions."
Two years after that, in an interview with USA Today, Cox admitted that the realities of being in a relationship were tougher than she originally imagined.
"I've got a lot of work to do on myself. Actors dating actors can work out. The most important thing is to be with someone who's creative and passionate about what they do," she commented.
Nowadays, Keaton is in a longtime relationship with Marni Turner, while his A-list ex-partner recently separated from musician Johnny McDaid.
