Matt Lucas confirms he's working on Little Britain follow up series with David Walliams

He has said the pair are 'brainstorming' ideas

Matt Lucas has confirmed that he and Little Britain co-creator David Walliams are ‘brainstorming’ ideas for a new show.

Lucas and Walliams created the successful but controversial sketch show back in 2003 and then went on to launch their second show Come Fly With Me, which was set with an airport.

In more recent years, Little Britain has attracted some criticism over its depiction of ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, as well as for how it dealt with issues of gender and sexuality.

As a result, the BBC removed the series from its streaming services in 2020, but has since replaced them with edited and amended versions.

Now, Lucas has confirmed that he and Walliams both 'quit their jobs' to focus on writing the new material.

In December last year, Lucas announced he was leaving The Great British Bake Off, while Walliams was replaced as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

Little Britain launched in 2003.

Speaking on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, Lucas said: “We just thought it was time so we quit our jobs and decided to do that. We just started last week, we got together and we started brainstorming.

“We’ve got an idea for a new show and we need a few more brainstorming sessions but we know what we want the show to be. It will be a show with us playing lots of characters, but we have to write the treatment for it and we have to go and pitch it and see if anyone wants to make it - but if someone wants to make it, we’ll be thrilled to do it.”

And it seems as though the comedy-writing duo have been keen to get cracking on the project for a while, with Lucas previously revealing they are working on an updated version of Little Britain that is more reflective of how we are now.

Back in April 2020, Lucas said: “We need to sit down and work out who we are bringing back and who we aren’t.

“I think the reason the show was successful is because it reflected how we all were back when we made it, if we hadn’t have got that right it wouldn’t have been so popular.

“I think to make it successful today you’d have to reflect how we all are now.

“I think you definitely have a better chance of success if you are in sync with how people are at that time.”
