Criminal mastermind Gru and his Minions have been on our screens since 2010 with the release of Despicable Me marking the start of the mega movie franchise. From fighting villains to projects attempting to steal the moon, five other films followed the original with a 6th being released this year entitled, Minions: The Rise of Gru.

With viewers ready for a whole new adventure with the reformed secret agent and his team of little yellow side-kicks, here’s everything we know about the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru.

When is Minions: The Rise of Gru coming out?

It has been announced that Minions: The Rise of Gru will be released in theatres on Friday, 1st July 2022 in both the US and the UK.

It isn’t yet known whether the film will stream on Netflix or Disney+, if either, but nevertheless is set to be one of the biggest animations of the year.

The Despicable Me and the Minions franchise have been produced by the film and animation studio Illumination, co-owned by Universal Pictures, for over a decade, and is their most successful body of work to date.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Trailer

The trailer for the second Minions film was released on 18th May, outlining Gru’s next adventure with his crazy miniature associates.

The film is set in the 1970s with a Gru who appears to be much younger than the grown bald man we see in the Despicable Me stories. The trailer shows his attempts to become a part of a group of super-villains called the Vicious 6. But when an interview with the gang goes terribly wrong, Gru and his yellow army, of which we can understand very few words besides the occasional ‘banana’ and ‘kevin’, find themselves on the run (a bizarre concept if you haven’t watched the films previous).

Minions: The Rise of Gru Soundtrack

The soundtrack sees multiple high-profile artists put their ‘own spin on classic ‘70s hits’, according to the Radio Times.

Being set in the 70s, naturally we can expect funk, disco and soul from the accompanying soundtrack, sure to implore viewers to get up and dance.

There is a brand new single that features in the film from Diana Ross and Tame Impala, titled Turn Up The Sunshine, and the full soundtrack is now available to pre-order in time for the film's release on 1st July.
