Sabrina Carpenter has responded after a video of her at Coachella responding to the crowd has caused controversy.
The singer was performing at Coachella festival when a member of the crowd made a loud ululating sound - sometimes referred to as a zaghrouta.
It's a high-pitched tone similar to a trill, and the sound is often used as a celebration or to signify extreme happiness or excitement.
Visibly confused, Carpenter asked the crowd: "I think I heard someone yodel... is that what you're doing? I don't like it."

The ululating fan yelled back "It's my culture!"
The 'Please Please Please' singer replied "That's your culture, yodelling?" as the fan responded: "It's a call... a call of celebration."
Carpenter frowned while asking the audience if she was actually at the Burning Man festival, which is more experimental than Coachella.

Looking unhappy, she asked: "What's going on, this is weird."
A video of the clip soon went viral, with fans fearing she would be 'cancelled', and others calling her 'Islamophobic' and 'xenophobic' as ululating or zaghrouta is common in African and Arabic culture.
The star has now responded on social media in the wake of the controversy.
Posting on her official X account, Carpenter wrote: "My apologies I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly."
She continued: "My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended."
The singer confessed: "Could have handled it better! Now I know what a zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out."
It hasn't gone down with everyone though, one critic replied: "You clearly heard them and said “this is your culture?” with that weirded-out face… if there hadn’t been backlash, you wouldn’t have even apologized."
"You literally asked them if that was their culture and said you didn’t like it afterwards girl bye. Performative and you probably about to promote an album and this is your way of “clearing your name” replied another.

"Girl stop lying you literally heard her when she said it was her culture cause you repeated it and yet you proceeded to call it weird" one social media user answered.
Another slammed: "The 'disdain' on your face was loud and clear. Don't act like it was just confusion. Our culture is beautiful and loud, if you can’t handle it with respect, don't pretend to care now just for PR."
One fan defended: "It’s okay I’m Arab and wasn’t offended, everyone has the right to have an opinion and to like or dislike whatever, it shouldn’t be insulting that’s just dumb. Love you"
"Should have doubled down not apologized. People who scream during the quiet parts of concerts are selfish af," insisted one fan.
Another replied: "I am Middle Eastern, I didn’t take offense, she didn’t understand and thought they were heckling her… yes she didn’t understand when they told her it’s cultural either because why would she? A Caucasian American who I’m assuming is not aware about the types of celebrations around the world."
