Righto, you lot. New Year's Eve is almost here, and you’ve got the honour and stress of hosting an NYE party. You’ve got the decorations, you’ve got the food and you’ve got the bevs. Now, you need a soundtrack that's going to keep your party from being a flop fest.

This year, you owe it to yourself and your mates to curate a kind of playlist that'll have something old, something new, and wall-to-wall bangers to take you into the new year. (Yes, you can keep Auld Lang Syne).

Whether hosting a low-key get-together or a floor-filling house party, be sure to consider these suggestions when building the ultimate NYE playlist.

The crowd pleasers

Advert

Now, every party is different and every partygoer has different tastes. But, no matter who is present at your New Year’s shinny, there are some tried and true classics that will get literally anyone going. Think ‘Mr. Brightside’, think ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, think ‘Wannabe.’

On a molecular level, there’s something in these songs that just get people on the dance floor whether they want to be there or not. They find themselves singing every single word even if they haven’t visited the song in years. These are the floorfillers any playlist needs to guarantee party success.

The ‘bet you haven't heard this in a while’ cuts

While the crowd pleasers are songs people might not be listening to every day, they’re etched into the mind of anyone who hears them, which leaves them feeling inescapable. But, for the ‘Bet You Haven’t Heard This In A While’ cuts, you’re looking for songs you know your friends know, but have been lost to the annals of time.

If I were to mention Lee Harding’s ‘Wasabi’, Alexis Jordan’s ‘Happiness’ or Stephanie McIntosh’s ‘Mistake’, there might be a faint bell ringing in your head. But, once they start playing, you remember them in crystal clear detail. They’re the songs that have you screaming “Oh my godddd!” involuntarily before being transported back to a simpler time.

The best of 2024

New Year’s Eve is all about looking back on the year that was, and bracing yourself for the year ahead. What better way to do that than to build a playlist with songs that defined the year?

You can sip on that me espresso, you can have it H-O-T-T-O-G-O and you can make sure your party has a strong serving of ‘MUSTAAAARD!’ 2024 was so chock full of absolute heaters that collating them into a playlist should be an easy task.

The ‘you’re welcome’ bangers

Think of the best playlist you’ve ever stumbled across. Was it full of songs you love and know like the back of your hand? Probably. But did it contain a few gems you’d never heard of that you’re now obsessed with? Absolutely.

Why not pay it forward and pass on the good deed to your guests? Here are some freebies for you: deBasement’s ‘Front Left Speaker’, Ninajirachi’s ‘How Could U’ and Fcukers’ ‘Homie Don’t Shake’.

In short, you’re welcome.

BRAT

The album didn’t put dancing and club culture in the spotlight for nothing. Enough said.
