A popular historical Netflix drama has been hailed ‘one of the best series in history’ after its epic series finale – and it has even been compared to the likes of Game of Thrones. Watch the trailer below:

Season 5 of The Last Kingdom aired on Netflix last month, but the series remains a top hit with viewers and remains firmly in the UK Top 10.

Based on The Saxon Stories, a set of historical fiction novels by author Bernard Cornwell, the show has amassed quite the loyal fanbase since it first aired in 2015.

Set during the second half of the 9th Century, the show follows Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) as he navigates Anglo-Saxon England, which is in danger of being overrun by Viking invaders from Denmark.

A synopsis reads: “Captured as a boy and raised by Danes after his uncle usurps his birthright, Uhtred comes to identify himself as Danish but misfortune and hopes of reclaiming Bebbanburg drive him into the service of Wessex, the titular last kingdom of the Saxons.

“From there, the story revolves around Uhtred's conflicting loyalties between the Danes and King Alfred, the man who dares to dream of a united England that can stand up to the invaders.”

Twitter users have continued to applaud the show for its exceptional season finale, as one wrote: “The Last Kingdom is my favourite Netflix show. Its series finale far surpassed Game of Thrones finale!”

“‘The Last Kingdom’ is the best show on Netflix,” tweeted another.

Extremely captivating from its soundtrack to its staging in battle through history, everything in general is transmitted in an impressive way, this season has been really moving and for me it is one of the best series in history.

A third person said: “What a show. Almost had me in tears, the last scene of the final episode. Anyone who hasn’t watched this show is genuinely missing out. 10/10 from me.”

Someone else added: “Just crying over the last episode of The Last Kingdom. Truly feel connected to these characters after these years of following the show.”

“Dawg, The Last Kingdom on Netflix… JUST WOW. Y’all need to watch it. 10/10,” wrote a fifth person.

Fans of the series will now eagerly be awaiting the follow-up film Seven Kings Must Die, which wrapped up filming last month.

Taking to Instagram, Alexander Dreymon wrote: “That’s a wrap on [The Last Kingdom], on Seven Kings Must Die, and on Uhtred, son of Uhtred. As you can tell, I’m slightly out of it, exhausted and overwhelmed.

“I feel so lucky that I got to live part time in Uhtred’s skin for so many years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.”

Netflix is yet to announce the release date for Seven Kings Must Die.
