Netflix slammed for LGBTQ tag on Jeffrey Dahmer series

"This is not the representation we're looking for"

Netflix's new Jeffrey Dahmer series has caused quite the stir for its gruesome subject matter, and now it's done the same with some viewers who noticed it was given an 'LGBTQ' tag. Take a look:

The show in question is Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a dramatisation of the prolific serial killer and cannibal who was convicted of the brutal killing of seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

Though Dahmer has been explored in many documentaries, films, books, and news articles in the past, one detail about his crimes that is often overlooked is the fact that many of his victims were LGBTQ+ POC.

Rashad Robinson, consulting producer of the show and president of Color Of Change, said the show aims to tell the story of the victims and the impact that Dahmer and local leaders' compliance had on their communities.

It's perhaps this reason why Netflix tagged the show in its 'LGBTQ' content, a decision that hasn't gone down well with the viewers.

Evan Peters plays the world-famous serial killer in the show.

As said by TikTok user Liz in the clip above: "This is not the representation we're looking for."

Another TikToker named Jamaili said she was 'livid' and 'flabbergasted' about the issue, highlighting that the show is tagged as 'LGBTQ' and 'Horror'.

She said: "I feel like horror implies a certain level of fiction and whimsy that is entirely non-existent and inappropriate for this situation."

Jamaili then highlighted the 'LGBTQ' tag, saying it 'associates us with a literal serial unaliver, cannibal, amongst other things I'm not sure I can say on this app'.

She added: "Jeffrey Dahmer is not the queer representation that we want, asked for, need - nothing."

Over on Twitter, the fury is just as prevalent, with one writing: "No way they put an LGBTQ tag on the new Dahmer series like PLEASE."

Another quipped: "Guys my favourite LGBTQ series on Netflix is: Rupaul’s Drag Race, Dahmer, and Queer Eye."

Not everyone was against the idea though, as some pointed to the fact that the show does explore LGBTQ+ injustices at the time.

"You’ve got to take the bad along with the good," wrote one, while another said: "The Dahmer case is a huge part of LGBTQ history, it’s important people know he got away with so much."

A third added: "And the Toronto village killer was able to get away with his crimes in the early 2000s for the same reason so the issue is still relevant."

LADbible has contacted Netflix for comment.
