Fans are praising ‘genius’ casting in Netflix’s new top TV series

Netflix's Addams Family adaptation Wednesday has been a hit with the viewers, but one classic character has drawn attention

Fans of the Netflix’s new Addams Family adaptation Wednesday have been seriously impressed with one of the pieces of casting. You can check out the trailer for the streaming platform’s top-rated show below.

It’s fair to say that the fans of Wednesday have been lapping it up, and whilst the critics haven’t exactly been as effusive in their praise of the show, they seem to be broadly happy with the casting decisions made.

Jenna Ortega plays the titular goth Wednesday Addams, and there are also star turns from Luis Guzmán as her father Gomez Addams and Catherine Zeta-Jones as mother Morticia.

What’s more, there’s even a little turn for Christina Ricci, who famously played Wednesday in the 1990s Addams Family film series.

Ricci shows up as one of Wednesday’s school teachers, in case you’re wondering.

Anyway, that’s not the piece of casting that has garnered the most attention.

Seasoned Addams Family fans will know that there’s one major character missing from the list we’ve compiled before.

He’s bald, he’s weird, we are – of course – talking about Uncle Fester.

In this latest Netflix effort, Fester is played by Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen, much to the delight of viewers.

Some have even gone as far as to call the move ‘genius’.

One person tweeted: “Ok I know I said Luis Guzmán was perfect as Gomez but I can’t believe no one has mentioned Fred Armisen as Fester.”

Another commented: “Fred Armisen as uncle Fester in Wednesday makes perfect sense.”

Someone else wrote: “I loved Wednesday but I feel like not enough people are talking about how great Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester was.”

On the whole casting, one observer wrote: “I have no complaints on casting.

“I think Jenna Ortega did an amazing job as Wednesday.

“Morticia and Gomez were also well cast and portrayed (mostly).

“Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester was genius imo, I loved him.”

Back in the 1990s when The Addams Family and Addams Family Values were released, Uncle Fester was played – with great success – by Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd.

However, it seems as if most would agree that Armisen has filled those large shoes admirably.

As we’ve mentioned, not all the critics have been as impressed as the viewers clearly have, with one review in The Independent stating: “For a show about vampires and werewolves, it has very little bite.”

Still, the Netflix viewing statistics don’t lie – it’s clearly doing pretty well.

If you want to watch Wednesday, it’s streaming on Netflix now.
