Viewers are begging Netflix to bring back ‘mindf*ck’ psychological thriller after ‘perfect’ first season

The series was cancelled after season 1

An incredible Netflix show fans are begging to have brought back after an incredible first season that has slowly gained a cult following?

Hmm, nope, doesn’t sound too familiar….

Jokes aside, the sad reality is that Netflix is a ruthless company, and no matter how much you love a show or believe in it, if the numbers aren’t there – incredible shows may have their life cut short.

One show, which was compared to Dark, lived this same sad lifespan, with the first season unanimously praised and 10s of 1000s even signing a petition trying to bring it back.

What is the show?

The show in question is called 1899, a German psychological thriller.

Created by the same pair behind Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the show follows a group of immigrants travelling from Southampton to New York to start a new life in 1899.

Whilst on the boat there, they run into whacky and weird supernatural goings-on.

How was it received?

The show may not have got Dark level praise, but it was given good reviews pretty much across the board.

With a rating of 7.3 on IMDb, and 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was a popular answer to a recent Reddit post asking for the best psychological thrillers.

One comment said: “1899 is a mind f***….a little slow to begin with but really gets going towards the end. The twists in the later episodes are crazy.”

Empire Magazine gave the show a 4/5, saying: “An intriguing, densely layered puzzle-box mystery that defies easy categorisation but somehow works.”

The Daily Telegraph gave the show the same rating, saying: “The increasingly feverish plot will thrill anyone who enjoys their prestige TV garnished with cerebellum-mulching psychological horror”.

How did fans respond to the cancellation?

With the show being cut short after just one season, fans were frustrated to say the least.

One change.org petition has over 100,000 signatures calling for the renewal of the show.

The cancellation was confirmed by co-creator bo Odar, who said: “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed.

“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark.

"But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

The change.org petition said: “1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind. After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.”

One signature on the petition added: “1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind.

“After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode.

“We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.”

As of yet, no plans have been made at Netflix to bring back 1899.
