Fans of the show Dark are often hit with a major issue when trying to find a similar series to watch on Netflix.

The issue is of course that there are so few shows like Dark out there that when you do find one that compares it is entirely rare.

The German TV series is a mind-bending, genre-defying show that received near-universal praise as one of the best shows which Netflix has produced.

Fans on Reddit however have managed to discover a series that is just like Dark, is also known as a massive mindf*ck of a series, and has a huge twist that viewers say you won’t see coming.

The series is the lesser-known follow-up from the creators of Dark called 1899. Take a look:

The series was made by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creative minds behind Dark.

1899 follows a group of immigrants travelling from the UK to New York in (you guessed it) the year 1899.

Along the way they come across another ship that went missing on a similar route called the Prometheus, finding it seemingly abandoned.

On further investigation however the ship throws out several signs that blur the lines between reality and simulation, making the people on board question their own existence.

One fan recently posted it to Reddit after finally trying the series, saying in a post on r/BestofNetflix: “1899 is one of the best on Netflix! It is NOT about what you think it is.

“I’m convinced the algorithm knows us better than we know ourselves.”

They described how the eight episode, one season show was recommended to them over and over, stating that they instead decided to rewatch familiar favourites like Dark and Breaking Bad.

They added: “I finally gave in and I’m so happy I did. I typically don’t like ‘ocean movies/shows’ but this is so much more than that.

“It’s insane and amazing. And I can’t say anything without giving anything away, though if you like mind bending thrillers akin to Lost/From/Dark then you’re going to LOVE this.”

One comment on the post said: “Same creators as Dark. You need to give them time and episodes to evolve.

“BTW, Dark is by far one of the best series on the platform.”

Another comment said: “Great show! I really wish it had kept going.”

The series was unfortunately cancelled by Netflix after just one season, leaving fans furious.

This eventually led to calls to renew the series, with more than 100,000 angry Netflix users signing a petition pressuring Netflix to bring it back.

While this has so far been unsuccessful, more users coming across the show and declaring it the ‘best on Netflix’ can only help its cause.

1899 is available to watch on Netflix.
