Jim Carrey reveals what he thinks happened to his character after leaving Truman Show's dome

The Truman Show was added to Netflix and Carrey has answered a very commonly asked question

Jim Carrey has had many iconic roles over the years, but there is perhaps none more iconic than his role in The Truman Show.

Arguably Carrey’s best dramatic performance of all his comedies, the film followed a man who didn’t realise his entire life was a TV show he was captive in.

The movie is trending once again, with one fan even taking to Reddit to question why so many people are currently talking about a film from 1998, noticing it trending on Letterboxd.

The answer for UK film fans is likely that Netflix quietly added the film in the UK and Ireland last week, rising to 10th in the streamer’s charts.

Many, however, will be wondering what happens after the end of The Truman Show.

Spoiler alert for a 27-year-old film – he escapes the dome where he was kept captive, forced into storylines such as his father dying when he was young.

Carrey was asked by Collider about his thoughts on a sequel during the press run for his 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog and, whilst he didn’t give a firm answer into whether he would or not, he did give an insight into what he thinks will have happened to Truman after the end of the film.

He said: “I often think and am asked about what I think would’ve happened to Truman when he went outside the wall.

“It took me a while to realise that basically he was alone out there too because everyone went back inside. They all wanted to be in the dome.”

The thought of Truman escaping and still being alone is a realistic - albeit depressing - interpretation of the ending.

Despite the slightly dampener this puts on the film, fans are still ecstatic to find out it has been added to Netflix.

One fan tweeted: “OMG THEY ADDED THE TRUMAN SHOW TO NETFLIX.”

Another was similarly thrilled, saying: “Netflix readded the Truman show so of course I was rewatching that sh*t,” while a third fan said: “the truman show is back on netflix we're so back.”

Whilst fans are unanimous in their joy to have it back on Netflix however, things are far more split when it comes to wanting a sequel.

In the comments of Carrey’s interview, one fan said: “I want more of the Truman Show, but at the same time, I don't think a sequel is needed.

“The whole point of the ending is that Truman realizes the truth and the show ends for us, the audience. Truman's life is no longer there for us to watch.”

Another was more unequivocal in their denial of a sequel, saying: “Not knowing what Truman is doing after he leaves is the whole point of the ending.

“He's gone out of the dome, so now we can't spy on him. I hope no sequel ever gets made.”

Regardless, the original classic is now easier than ever for film fans in the UK to watch.

The Truman Show is now streaming on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
