People are finally working out what woman says in Leave the World Behind as subtitles don't show up

Fans still can't understand what the Spanish woman says in Leave the World Behind due to lack of subtitles

Leave the World Behind has caused endless debates over its controversial ending and troubling themes - and there's one particular scene that has left viewers scratching their heads.

This pre-Apocalyptic flick landed on Netflix only this month and it’s been driving viewers wild.

But there's one question viewers desperately want answering: what exactly was the Spanish woman in the road saying when she confronted Ethan Hawke's character?

And now, we finally have a translation.

This movie focuses on the collapse of society, with a married couple at the centre of it all.

Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clary (Hawke) have to navigate the unexpected with their two kids, Rosie (Farrah Mackenzie) and Archie (Charlie Evans).

The couple decide to go on a much-needed break, and all seems to be sunny until a giant ship crashes into the beach, hundreds of deer begin to loom around their vacation home, and then they're surprised by mysterious visitors.

Amid all the madness, Clay sets out in the car to try and find more information about what's happening when he comes across a woman calling for help on the side of the road.

After stopping and rolling down his window to speak to this panicked woman, the language barrier becomes evident.

But not just for him, for us at home too.

The Spanish Lady didn't have subtitles and now fans are baffled about the conversation.

Usually, when other languages are spoken on a Netflix production, subtitles are there to help us out.

But not this time. If you turn English closed captions on, all Netflix gives you is [Speaking Spanish].

As the pair begin to shout over each other in their respective languages, it’s pretty difficult to follow what is happening.

Though, one TikToker thinks this was an intentional move to show society’s reliance on technology.

They explained: "In the scene where the lady is speaking Spanish to Clay, they purposely didn't put subtitles to symbolise that we'd be lost without technology."

However, it's just as likely to be a jibe at Clay and his inability to understand other languages, since Netflix viewers who can speak Spanish could obviously understand what was going on.

For the rest of us, however, we've finally been given a translation.

Leave the World Behind is full of mystery.

According to AuralCrave, when she first flags Clay down the woman says: "Please! Sir! I need help, please! Please, sir!"

Then, when he stops, she says: "Thank God I found someone! I’m trying to get back to my home! I’m lost! I’ve been walking for a while!

"I need to use your phone! You’re the first person I’ve seen all day! We have to get out of here!

"I just saw a plane that was spraying red gas in the vicinity. I saw some deer, more than 50. They were coming out of the woods.

"Please! I need to go home, sir. A military plane appeared and fled. There’s no one around! Is it a chemical attack?"

Pretty useful information for Clay to have, all told - but instead of helping the woman, he chooses to drive off and abandon her.
