Major plot hole pointed out from Netflix’s Leave the World Behind

Major plot hole pointed out from Netflix’s Leave the World Behind

Eagle-eyed Netflix viewers have noticed there is a slight inconsistency in the storyline of Leave the World Behind

Eagle-eyed Netflix viewers have noticed there is a slight inconsistency in the storyline of Leave the World Behind.

The new apocalyptic disaster thriller is chock-a-block with twists and turns as well as a lot of drama, but some people still had their eye on the ball and managed to spot a detail that doesn't quite make sense.

Since the star-studded movie landed on the streaming platform on Friday (8 December), thousands of fans have grabbed the popcorn and tuned in - before sharing rave reviews of the chilling flick.

Hollywood icons Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la Herrold and Kevin Bacon received praise for their leading roles in Leave the World Behind, after all taking on complex characters.

The film is brimming with class divisions and conspiracy theories while following a mission for survival in the midst of an apocalyptic disaster.

Its official synopsis on Netflix reads: "A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout.

"As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world."

Roberts stars as Amanda Sandford, an advertising executive from New York City who is in search of a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life and the gadgets that are glued to us.

She organises a trip to Long Island with her husband Clay Sandford (Hawke) and their two teenagers (Charlie Evans and Farrah Mackenzie), but the brood has barely unpacked by the time things start getting very weird.

Tech-obsessed kid Rose is a fan of Friends in the film.

One of the main running themes throughout Leave the World Behind is our reliance on modern technology; including our penchant for binging boxsets.

Mackenzie,18, portrays Rose, Amanda and Clay's TV obsessed daughter who just wants to finish Friends.

So the tech-obsessed teen is pretty furious when they arrive at their holiday home to find they have no internet connection - meaning she is unable to watch the finale of the 90s sitcom.

Amid all the chaos which unfolds before her - including Wi-Fi outages, deer infestations, a roadside graveyard of Tesla Model 3s and beached cargo ships - she can't get Friends off her mind.

Rose is constantly mentioning the fact she can't watch the final episode of the tenth series, even when she watches New York City get bombed with her mum.

When the duo find a bunker in a random home while seeking safety from Armageddon, the first thing she does is find a DVD of Friends and watches the last episode.

But if you cast your mind back, you might remember Rose's on-screen mother had a cameo in the hit TV show.

Viewers noticed a Julia Roberts-sized plot hole in the Netflix movie.

In a 1996 episode, Julia Roberts starred as Susie Moss, the love interest and childhood friend of Chandler, aka the late Matthew Perry.

In The One After The Super Bowl Part 2, the pair reconnect and reminisce on a film set before they start dating.

To jog your memory a bit more - she ends up convincing Chandler to wear panties to dinner and strip down to his lingerie in the toilet cubicle.

Roberts then steals his clothes and bolts out the door as payback for him lifting up her skirt during a school play - proving that revenge is a dish best served cold.

The actress and Perry also briefly dated in 1995, but split two months after the episode aired.

Leave the World Behind viewers couldn't believe the plot hole and took to social media to share their thoughts.

One said: "The kid watching Friends on her tablet in Leave the World Behind is going to have her mind blown when Julia Roberts shows up."

Another laughed: "It’s absolutely sending me that the daughter character of Julia Roberts’ in #LeaveTheWorldBehind is *obsessed* with FRIENDS, yet doesn’t recognize it’s Julia Roberts in the series (playing Chandler’s love interest). Maybe they’re following Ocean’s Twelve rules."

A third added: "They stressed the point that she was obsessed with the show, so she must have noticed."

And a fourth commented: "This is great!"
