A British crime thriller which many fans have called the ‘best thing on Netflix’ has left viewers floored after the reveal of a twist at the end of the first episode.

In the era of streaming, viewers have 1000s of options for TV shows to watch at the edge of their fingertips, so the best shows know that they likely only have one episode to hook you from the get go.

Well, a new Netflix series does this effectively with an outstanding twist right at the end of the first episode that totally reframes the show, leaving viewers desperate to keep watching.

This thankfully continues far beyond the first episode, with fans praising the show and already begging for a second season.

Called Dept Q, the Netflix series focuses on a traumatised detective Carl Morck, recovering from having been mysteriously shot in the neck whilst attending a crime scene.

After he survives and returns to duty a cold case department is set up, led by Morck, along with a ragtag group of detectives.

Spoilers for episode one of Dept Q

The first episode focuses on Morck and a Scottish prosecutor, Merritt Lingard, with viewers trying to figure out how the two are going to intertwine as she deals with her mentally disabled brother and tries to put away a man accused of domestic abuse and killing his wife.

At the end of episode one however it is revealed that all is not as you assume as a viewer.

In actual fact Merritt Lingard ends up being the cold case that Morck selects as the department’s first when it is revealed she was kidnapped, and the scenes we see are actually taking place years earlier.

One fan posted the twist to TikTok, calling it ‘jaw-dropping’, with another commenting: “I was floored.”

Another said: “that was the hook, couldn’t walk away after that.”

And a third commented: “broo when I saw this part I was SAT!!!”

The series has been a hit with fans so far and more than a week and a half on from its release, it still sits at number two in the UK and number four worldwide on Netflix.

It also sits at an average of 8.4 on IMDb, with fans already calling for a second season.

One fan tweeted: “Everyone needs to watch DEPT Q on Netflix so they make at least a Season 2.”

Another said: “Dept Q on Netflix is such a good crime thriller. [The show’s star] Matthew Goode's acting was next level! I hope they make season 2 of this series.”

Thankfully if fans want a season two, the show’s creator Scott Frank has told us exactly what needs to happen.

In an exclusive interview with LADbible, Frank said: "I just think people have to watch it in significant enough numbers that it's worth it to do another season, even for me.

"I mean, I would love to do another season, but if people you know don't watch it, then I can take the hint. If [viewers] do watch it in significant numbers, then it would be fun to do the next book, which I already have in my brain how I'd like to do that."

If the potential second season can match the twists and turns of Netflix’s season one it is sure to be a classic.

Dept Q is available to watch on Netflix now.
