A new documentary about two of the UK's most prolific and despicable serial killers is coming to Netflix, and promises to show new footage of Fred and Rose West.

Netflix says the true crime documentary will have 'exclusive access to previously unseen police video and unheard audio recording' as it shows how police found the victims of the husband and wife serial killers.

While their names are well known in the UK, Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story will also feature interviews with family members of some of the couple's victims as they speak about the torment they've been through.

Some are speaking for the first time, and the three-part series aims to tell their story along with the case that was built against the couple.

For those unfamiliar with the names Fred and Rose West committed at least 12 murders, most of them together, between 1967 and 1987 then buried the bodies of many of their victims in their garden.

Check out the trailer:

Speaking to Deadline, documentary maker Dan Dewsbury spoke about the work that had gone into the Netflix series and how they'd used footage and audio that had not been seen before.

He said: “Making this series has been a huge undertaking for our team.

"Getting access to never before seen video, never before heard tapes, access to people who have never previously spoken about the case, whilst also balancing the sensitivities of the families, after decades of quiet heartbreak and strength, has been inspiring to be part of.

"We have huge respect for the police investigation which led to Fred and Rose West being held responsible for the crimes."

There will be three episodes in total, the first focusing on Fred West's arrest, the second on the investigation focusing on Rose West and the third will delve into the discovery of the true extent of the couple's crimes.

Among the victims of the couple's vile crimes were their own children, with them murdering their daughter Heather and subjecting their children to physical and sexual violence.

Social workers picked up on comments made by the family about 'Heather being under the patio', which was passed off as a 'family joke' and they alerted the police.

With a police investigation into Heather's whereabouts turning up nothing, officers obtained a warrant to search the West house and started examining the property.

On 25 February, 1994, Fred West asked to go with them to the police station, he then admitted to killing his daughter and told officers they were looking in the wrong spot in the garden, leading to his arrest.

Rose West was arrested the same day.

Fred West was found dead in his prison cell on 1 January 1995, having died by suicide, while Rose West was sentenced to a whole life order in prison and is currently an inmate at HMP New Hall.
