Netflix’s Griselda hits historic Rotten Tomatoes milestone for leading lady Sofia Vergara

It's going down as her greatest work to date

Netflix has another number one TV show and it goes by the name of Griselda.

The gritty crime thriller has knocked documentary mini-series American Nightmare off of the top spot, with the biggest show of January Fool Me Once completing the podium spots.

The Netflix Originals show stars Modern Family's Sofia Vergara as cocaine baron, Griselda Blanco.

It follows her real-life journey from the Colombian city of Medellin to New York and then Miami in the United States of American, telling the story of how she got her infamous nickname as the 'Godmother of Cocaine'.

With just six episodes to watch, the story runs at a fast pace and shows all the key moments from Blanco's life.

Chatting away on The Graham Norton Show ahead of Griselda's release, Vergara said: "It is a true story of a woman that no one ever suspected of being one of the biggest drug dealers that ever existed.

People have already binge-watched all six episodes of Griselda.

"She created an insane cartel, and I went crazy for the story."

It's a big change in role for Vergara, especially compared to her work in Modern Family that made her a household face and name.

But it's one she has pulled off expertly, with fans waxing lyrical after binging it over the weekend.

One wrote: "Every now and then a show comes around to keep me from canceling my subscription to Netflix."

A second said: "Griselda on Netflix is so good! Sofia Vergara killed that role."

While a third wrote: "Netflix trapped me into Griselda and I can’t say I regret it."

Another wrote: "Griselda on Netflix is good as f**k, I finished the whole series in one night."

Critics have been equally as favourable, so much so it's given Vergara a new top spot for her career.

Over on critic aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it has become the top rated film or TV show that Vergara has ever starred in.

Prior to Griselda that accolade went to comedy/drama film Chef directed by Jon Favreau, known for his stellar work in the Avengers and Star Wars universes.

Griselda has pipped Chef by the slimmest of margins, with an 88% rating to its 87% score.

Writing about the new Griselda Blanco crime drama, Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times writing: "Even though the attempt at a makeover is an unfortunate distraction, the former Modern Family star goes full Pacino-in-Scarface mode and delivers a robust, screen-rattling, suitably over-the-top performance."

Tom Gliatto from People Magazine said: "Vergara’s performance is an irresistible star turn that never sacrifices an almost- retro sense of glamour, no matter how many hit jobs Griselda orders."
