Sofía Vergara stars as Griselda Blanco in new Netflix series about the drug lord

Fans have been looking forward to seeing Sofía Vergara's 'monster' role in new Netflix series Griselda.

The Modern Family star has been out promoting her new role as drug lord Griselda Blanco, who earned the nickname 'Black Widow' for a chilling reason.

Take a look at the eerie trailer below:

Opening up on the role on The Graham Norton Show, the Columbian actor explained: "It is a true story of a woman that no one ever suspected of being one of the biggest drug dealers that ever existed.

"She created an insane cartel, and I went crazy for the story.

"She was Colombian, an immigrant, and a very tough ruthless woman. She was a monster. It was the role for me."

She added: "The hardest thing was that I had to wear a wig, fake teeth, fake nose, and have a plastic forehead.

"I also had to wear uncomfortable bras that pushed me down to make me look less Latin.

"It was a complicated character for me, but it was my first film in Spanish which was so liberating."

Now, if we take deeper look at Griselda Blanco, she entered the drug trade in 1964 when she moved to the US with her four children and husband, going on to establish her cocaine trade.

Nicknamed the 'Black Widow', she would frequently travel from Colombia to escape authorities before returning to the US, changing passports and identities along the way.

Blanco maintained her drug empire, reportedly making a whopping $80 million per month and becoming tied up in the Miami Drug War of the 70s to 80s.

Bob Palombo, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who tracked her for a decade, described Blanco as a person who 'loved killings,' as bodies 'lined the streets of Miami' as a result of her 'feuds'.

Whether she killed 'rivals' or 'wayward lovers', he claimed she was 'cancelling debts she didn't want to pay'.

She has been linked to 40 to 250-plus murders during her time as a cartel boss.

And the reason why she was given her nickname the 'Black Widow' was because she was said to have killed at least two of her husbands.

As mentioned, Vergara underwent a dramatic transformation to play the drug lord.

To complete her overhaul, Vergara wore a prosthetic nose and a set of fake teeth that were slightly bucked and yellow as Blanco is seen puffing on a cigarette throughout the series - something the actor said she had to learn how to do for the role.

The six-part limited series is available to watch on Netflix now.
