Netflix viewers all say the same thing after spotting Happy Gilmore 2 references to star’s legal troubles

The film did not hold back on making jokes about his arrest

Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 has been a hit with viewers so far, topping the streamer's charts both worldwide as well as in the UK and the United States.

Despite getting more mixed reviews from critics, the Adam Sandler-led comedy has seen fans taking to social media to discuss their favourite parts of the film.

One particular aspect of the movie has had a host of Netflix users singing the same tune - particularly about the film’s willingness to play with one star’s legal troubles.

The sequel sees the titular Happy Gilmore broke and down on his luck, 29 years on from his Golf Open win.

He is eventually coaxed out of retirement, however, to help traditional golf in battling a new ‘more exciting’ version of the sport based around trying to make it faster and more entertaining.

Joining Sandler in the cast are a host of returning stars from the original film, as well as several celebrity cameos such as Travis Kelce, Becky Lynch, and Bad Bunny, and a number of professional golfers.

Of these golfing superstars who play themselves in Happy Gilmore 2, including Rory McIlroy, John Daly, and Bryson DeChambeau, arguably the stand-out role goes to Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler is currently the number one golfer in the world and has won four majors before the age of 30, however, many will have heard the name for things that happened outside of the sport.

The star was arrested last year after a bizarre incident in which he was accused of second-degree assault of a police officer while travelling to the second round of the US PGA Championships, as well as a host of misdemeanours.

The charges were later dropped, and he was released in time to play the second round, but it made international news.

However, it seems Scheffler has a good sense of humour about the incident as Happy Gilmore 2 features a few jokes as his expense.

After asking Happy for advice on fighting, he steps up for the first round of the climactic showdown between traditional Golf and ‘Maxi Golf’ and proceeds to sock his opponent in the face and gets arrested, saying ‘Oh no, not again’.

The rest of his part in the film is shown from a holding cell in prison, watching the event on TV.

This led a number of fans to come to the same conclusion - that Scheffler was the best part of Happy Gilmore 2.

One tweet read: “Scottie Scheffler was the best part of the Happy Gilmore movie.”

A second fan said: “Happy to report that Happy Gilmore 2 CRUSHES it. That’s how a legacy sequel should be done. Scottie Scheffler steals the show.”

Another added: “Scottie Scheffler somehow also won Happy Gilmore 2. Made me laugh more than anyone else in the movie.”

Even fans who didn't love the movie were a fan of the golfer-turned-actor, with one saying that him being arrested was ‘legitimately the only new joke in the movie’ that made them laugh.

Happy Gilmore 2 is available to watch on Netflix now.
