Horror series and films are scary enough when they are entirely made up.

When you find out, though, that there are elements of them based on true events, it can add an extra little chill up your spine.

This is exactly how viewers will feel when they dig deeper into Netflix’s newest horror series, which has shot straight to the top of the streamer’s charts.

The series is based on a book which was inspired by a series of real-life murders.

The murders in question saw villagers burned at the stake in Sussex for their religious beliefs.

The show released on Paramount+ last year, and has just been added to Netflix in the UK.

Check out the trailer below:

The show in question is called The Burning Girls, and after being added earlier this week, it's shot to number four on Netflix’s charts.

It follows a small English village, with a Reverend and her young daughter recently having moved.

Upon arrival, they discover a dark history in the community, mistrust of ‘outsiders’, and even rumours that two young girls haunt the village after having been burned at the stake.

This is based on the real-life Sussex Martyrs, killed when Mary I, a queen during the 16th century, killed protestants across the country.

She was known as ‘Bloody Mary’ by opponents to her rule.

The series has mostly received positive reviews, with a 6.7 on IMDb and a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Only six episodes long, the show can easily be binged in a weekend (or one sitting, if you’re really into it).

In Lucy Mangan’s review for The Guardian, she said the show was ‘everything you could possibly want from a pre-Halloween fright-fest’.

One 10/10 review on IMDb said: “Even though there were 6 episodes it kept my interest.

“Great plot, and characters, the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. And made me jump. Very binge worthy.

“The acting was superb, I would like to see more shows like this please.”

Another on IMDb said: “I was sceptical about this show but wow it left my mind blown, very clever series and I most certainly did not see that huge twist coming in the last episode! I would go as far as saying this is the best series I have watched in a long time.

“Loved the fact it had a very small but impressive cast, very cleverly produced and the writer should also take so much credit for writing a masterpiece.

“Samantha Morton is one of my favourite actresses and she did not disappoint in this show, I was also super impressed with Conrad Khan, he played his role so well and he has a great future in front of him.”
